YouTube Premium has been expanding in a couple of ways over the last years, including adding tiers for families and students. A new YouTube Premium tier has appeared in select regions for groups of just two people, coming in at a lower cost than the full-fledged five-person offering.

YouTube is celebrating its 20th birthday with a number of stats, while previewing new features that are coming this year. 

Some users have reported a new YouTube homepage bug that allows the recommendation page to appear with few or no videos. YouTube is aware of the new bug and seems to be working on a fix.

Fake movie trailers are everywhere on YouTube, but now action is finally being taken against some of them after it was publicly revealed that movie studios were cashing in on those videos.

Google has confirmed it is investigating an issue causing low quality in playback of videos and Shorts through the YouTube app on iOS.

We know that YouTube is becoming a new home for podcasts, but to help expand, the dedicated Android TV apps dedicated “Podcasts” sidebar tab is now rolling out widely.

In announcing the new Premium Lite subscription tier today, YouTube reaffirmed its commitment to music on the platform.  

The YouTube app for TV — not to be confused with YouTube TV — is reportedly looking to take on a redesign in order to make more paid content available to users. This move would put the app in line to compete with other paid content providers like Amazon Prime Video or Disney+.

Following reports last month, YouTube Premium Lite has just launched for $7.99/month in the US and promises to make “most” videos ad-free.

Earlier this year, YouTube became the “most frequently used service for listening to podcasts in the U.S.” and it’s now seeing “1 billion monthly active viewers of podcast content.” 

Introduced a few months ago, the AI dubbing function is one of the few excellent uses of the technology to try and open videos to a wider global audience. To help with that YouTube on Android TV now has a “Dubbed” tag to help you see which videos have been translated using AI.

YouTube is improving the experience of listening to songs and watching music videos on TVs with Display options, like live lyrics.

Towards the end of last year, YouTube introduced a “new, softer shade of red” and a magenta gradient alongside other design changes to the app. The team behind it has now detailed the changes.

YouTube has gotten around to fixing some visual bugs with the in-app miniplayer on Android. The redesign was introduced back in October.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan today is out with an overview of “big bets for 2025,” with this year marking the site’s 20th birthday.

YouTube appears to be removing the “Guest” profile from its TV apps, starting on Apple TV and Roku.
