Verizon reportedly in talks with others to build global Android app store

Update: Verizon tells Re/code it has no plans to create an app store, adding “Been there. Done that.”

According to a new report from The Information, Verizon is looking to launch its own global app store and in the process has held talks regarding building an “industry coalition” of sorts with other carriers to do so. The app store would of course be a direct competitor for Google’s own Play Store that currently controls the majority of app downloads made on Android devices.

Sprint announces revamped family data plans with double data, individual plans coming soon

Sprint has unveiled its newest family data plans in an attempt to win back customers that have fled to rivals AT&T and Verizon. The new plans offer twice as much data as the competition at about the same prices. It’s the latest move by the floundering carrier following the less-than-stellar reception of its recently-announced “Framily” plans.

The new plans allow up to ten lines with a shared data pool of 20 GB—paired an additional 2 GB per device as part of a limited-time offer—for a grand total of up to $40 GB of shared data through 2015. A pricing chart (below) breaks down how all of the charges in the new plans work, including an additional $10 per tablet and shared data packs of up to 60 GB.

Verizon bundling an extra gigabyte of data with its MORE Everything service plans

Verizon announced a new promotion today that offers an additional gigabyte of sharable data when customers activate a new smartphone or upgrade a new smartphone on one of the carrier’s MORE Everything plans. In order to take advantage of this deal, you’ll need to be on a MORE Everything plan that uses at least 1GB of data.

Verizon announces plans to launch VoLTE service in Q4 2014, will still release CDMA-capable phones until 2016

Verizon Wireless has announced its plans to launch support for Voice over LTE service (or VoLTE) on its cellular network later this year, according to FierceWireless. However, the company says it has moved back its plan to release a VoLTE-only phone until 2016, and will continue releasing CDMA-capable phones until that time. Such a device was originally anticipated for the end of 2014.

The carrier originally announced earlier this year that it would support the new voice service, which provides higher-quality phone calls by utilizing high-speed data connections, but declined at the time to say exactly when it would happen. Other U.S. carriers, including T-Mobile and AT&T, have already started rolling the technology out in select markets.

Although we’ve heard rumors about new Motorola-made devices heading to Big Red, it’s really hard to tell what this mystery gadget may be. The soon to be former Google-owned company recently scored a trademark for the name “Moto Maxx,” which could possibly be heading to Verizon.

T-Mobile’s VoLTE service rolls out nationwide following Seattle launch

T-Mobile announced during its earnings report that it has now completed its US roll-out of its Voice over LTE service after its launch in Seattle back in May and expansion to 16 markets last month.

With more than 8 million VoLTE-capable devices on the T-Mobile network, our customers have made over 52 million crystal-clear VoLTE calls to date.

VoLTE offers faster call setup and better audio quality during calls through HD Voice, as well as the ability to switch seamlessly between voice and video calls. It’s supported by a limited number of handsets at present, with the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Light and LG’s G Flex among them, but is likely to become a standard feature over time. Verizon has also announced that it will be launching its own VoLTE service nationwide later in the year.

T-Mobile also noted that JD Power just ranked T-Mobile the highest in customer service among the top four major U.S. wireless providers, AT&T taking second place, Verizon third and Sprint Nextel fourth.

LG G Vista reportedly coming to Verizon on July 31st for $99 on a two year service agreement

Verizon will launch the LG G Vista on July 31st for $99 on a two year service agreement, according to Droid-Life. We first got a look at this unannounced handset earlier this month and although it features a design style similar to LG’s flagship G3, the G Vista’s specs are definitely cut from a different cloth. This budget-friendly smartphone reportedly features a 5.7-inch 720p display, a Snapdragon 400 processor, 1.5GB of RAM, a 3,200mAh battery, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and an 8-megapixel rear-facing shooter.

Verizon Moto X updated to Android 4.4.4

Last Friday, Verizon began soak testing the Android 4.4.4 update on the Moto X. Today, Verizon officially began rolling out the update to all users. The update, which focuses primarily on camera enchantments lists “improved camera picture quality” and “improved photos in fluorescent lighting” as the two main changes. Other changes include a “new graphical layout” to the phone dialer and overall “consistency and usability” improvements.

Verizon to begin throttling certain unlimited 4G LTE customers

Verizon has been throttling unlimited 3G data subscribers for years now, but never 4G LTE users. Until today, when they announced this morning that beginning October 1st, the top 5% of 4G LTE data users who coincidentally meet a series of other factors will get throttled. According to DroidLife, a recent report showed that over 20% of Verizon data users were still on an unlimited data plan, so it’s no surprise that Verizon would want to push these users to a tiered data plan.

If you’re not familiar with the ~~mini 2~~ Remix, it’s pretty much a watered-down version of the HTC One M8.

The HTC One Remix will be launching on Verizon on July 24th, according to @evleaks. If you’re unfamiliar with this device, it’s believed to be the US version of the HTC One mini 2, which features a 4.5-inch 720p display, a quad-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 13-megapixel rear-facing shooter and a front-facing 5-megapixel camera. This compressed HTC One also ships with Android 4.4.2 skinned with Sense 6.

Verizon today announced that it is finally adding 4G LTE support to its ALLSET prepaid plans starting on July 17th. This announcement comes just a few weeks after the addition was originally rumored. Starting on July 17th, customers can bring their own devices to ALLSET and use them with LTE data, in addition to using the devices already offered through ALLSET by Verizon.

Verizon’s LG G Vista specs leak, feature Snapdragon 400 CPU, 1.5 GB RAM, 8 MP camera

Supposedly a “lite” variation on the LG G Pro 2, the LG G Vista, was leaked last month with Verizon branding. At the time, we didn’t have much information about the device other than its familiar appearance. Today, we have another leak courtesy of @evleaks detailing the device’s mid-range specifications.

Based on the above tweet, we can assume that the device will have LTE capabilities, a Snapdragon 400 CPU, 8 GB of flash memory, 1.5 GB of RAM, a 3,200 mAh battery, and front and back cameras clocked at 1.3 MP and 8 MP.

Back in May, HTC officially unveiled the “beautifully compact” One Mini 2 phone, but with sparse details on United States availability. Early rumors pointed to the device launching in the United States on Verizon, but rebranded as the HTC One Remix. Today, Big Red seemingly confirmed the One Remix by inadvertently uploading a promo video for it to its YouTube channel. The video has since been set to private, but not without some quick eyes catching what it talked about.
