Google has been slowly building out a “desktop mode” for Android for quite some time now and it appears nearly ready to launch with Android 16, and Samsung seems to be building on it with a redesign of DeX.

Samsung’s One UI 7 is coming up soon, and more than just on-device software changes, it will also bring a shift in support for certain applications. Samsung’s DeX feature will no longer be supported on Galaxy devices running One UI 7 while connected to Windows.

As new iPads loom, it’s a good reminder that the only good Android tablets are the ones with Samsung DeX. Now, Samsung is debuting a new wireless keyboard that includes a button dedicated to DeX.

Computer monitors are usually just displays for a connected device, but following in the footsteps of its TVs, Samsung is releasing a new Smart Monitor that packs native apps, Apple AirPlay 2, and support for the Samsung DeX platform.

Samsung has now confirmed that the One UI 2.1 update for the Galaxy S20 series brings with it a series of new features for the DeX desktop mode, such as window snapping when using a mouse, plus more.

Samsung’s DeX desktop environment gives us a smart way to use all that processing power in flagship Galaxy phones for something other than browsing Instagram. DeX provides a Windows-like desktop experience, but you have to buy a special DeX Station to make it all work. That is, unless you have one of the new 10-series phones. How does this “dockless” DeX work?

Late last year, Samsung and Canonical partnered on an app that allowed select Galaxy phones to run a full Linux desktop on top of Android. Less than a year later, Samsung has announced that they’re discontinuing the Linux on DeX program, coinciding with the update to Android 10.

Samsung’s DeX platform is a clever way to use your smartphone on a much bigger canvas, but it’s always felt a bit like a solution in search of a problem. Today, Samsung is highlighting a perfect use case for DeX — police cars in the city of Chicago.

For years, we’ve all longed for the ultimate all-in-one style device that can be both a mobile phone and also full laptop or desktop computer experience. Samsung has offered its own Android-centric solution through DeX, which gives Android a better keyboard and mouse experience. Now Samsung seeks to take that a step further by turning your phone into a real computer with ‘Linux on DeX.’

According to a European Samsung forum moderator, the company is working on a wire-free solution for their Samsung DeX Experience system. This might help increase uptake as, at the moment, Samsung devices that support the feature need either a DeX docking station or USB Type-C dongle — only compatible with the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

The idea of powering your workstation with your smartphone is something that feels like it was ripped out of a TV show, but with our powerful smartphones today, it’s something that is very much achievable.
With the launch of its latest flagship, the Galaxy S8, Samsung stressed the phone’s ability to dock to a monitor and display a full desktop environment powered by the phone. Now Samsung is finally advertising the feature, and I still can’t stop thinking about how much better this would be as a laptop.

In this day and age, our smartphones hardly leave our side and the only time we often set them down is when we sit down at our desktop computer. With how powerful our phones are these days, why not just use them as our main computer so that we don’t have to switch from system to system? Well, with the DeX, Samsung hopes to make this dream a reality by using the Galaxy S8 as a desktop…
