The lines between Oppo and OnePlus are set to blur even further with confirmation that the Find X5 and future Find X series devices will come with Hasselblad tuning and performance improvements.

The Oppo takeover of OnePlus has left a lot of questions over the past year, and software was the biggest concern for many. According to a new report, OnePlus and Oppo are due to fully merge their OxygenOS and ColorOS skins into one with Android 13.

A small series of supposed Oppo Find X5 Pro hands-on images suggest that the upcoming flagship may come with a Hasselblad branding, with some specifications also similarly confirmed.

The chips used by Android devices are mostly provided by just two companies, but over the past couple of years, more major device makers have been working on their own chip designs. Today, Oppo is debuting its first self-made chip, the MariSilicon X imaging chip.

Yesterday saw the debut of the first mainstream Android smartphone in the US in years that runs on a chip that’s not from Qualcomm or MediaTek. The Pixel 6 runs on top of Google Tensor, a specialized chip developed by Google, and it seems that move won’t be alone as another major name in the smartphone industry, Oppo, is now also working on its own chip design.

Google just released Android 12 to AOSP today, but not to its own Pixel smartphones. Where those will be delayed by a “few weeks,” Oppo has just announced that it will release ColorOS based on Android 12 to select regions starting today, though only in beta.

OnePlus has confirmed that not only is any potential 9T off the table for 2021, but that the firm’s 2022 flagship will run a merged ColorOS and OxygenOS.

The war on bezels has led to some creative solutions for selfie cameras, but the goal has clearly been finding a way to hide the camera underneath the display. That tech exists and is slowly coming to market, and this week, Oppo is showing off a new version of its under-display camera that doesn’t compromise too much on photo quality.

Last week, OnePlus officially announced that it would merge with its BBK sibling, Oppo. Now, thanks to a leaked memo posted by Evan Blass, we’re getting a better picture of what that means, including confirming that OnePlus is now a sub-brand under Oppo’s umbrella.

OnePlus and Oppo are formalizing their relationship and merging internal teams with the goal of improving software and speed up other actions. Despite that, though, CEO Pete Lau says OxygenOS will survive the OnePlus/Oppo merger.

After years of OnePlus and Oppo clearly sharing the same resources but, the former, confidently coming across as their own entity. Last year, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau took on a bigger role that involved overseeing portions of both OnePlus and Oppo, and now he’s merging more teams internally on the promise of better efficiency and faster software updates.

OnePlus phones globally have long shipped with the company’s OxygenOS, which delivers a stock-like look with lots of customization options and questionable background app practices. In China, though, OnePlus phones have always shipped with a much heavier skin known as HydrogenOS. That may soon change, though, as OnePlus is reportedly switching to use ColorOS from Oppo on its Chinese models.

If you are to go out and get a smartphone in early 2021, the Oppo Find X3 pro should be a candidate. That’s provided you can stomach the entry price and it’s available in your region.
