Nexus 6

See All Stories

Google announced its highly anticipated Nexus 6 smartphone in 2014. The phone ships with Android 5.0 Lollipop, packs a massive 5.96-inch 1,440 x 2,560 display, a 2.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, an Adreno 420 GPU, 3GB of RAM, a 3,220mAh battery, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter.

In addition to its impressive hardware, the Nexus 6 supports wireless charging and also comes with Motorola’s Turbo charger, which is capable of charging the device up to six hours of battery life in around 15 minutes. However, if that’s not enough, Android 5.0 also includes a battery saving mode that can add an extra 90 minutes of juice to your device.

Google scrapped the Nexus 6’s fingerprint scanner just a few months before it launched

Many details surrounding the Nexus 6 were leaked in the months leading up to the smartphone’s launch in late October, although one oft-rumored tech specification that proved to be absent was a fingerprint scanner akin to Touch ID on the iPhone. The initial reports calling for a fingerprint scanner weren’t necessarily wrong, however, based on new evidence uncovered in Android’s open source code.

Ars Technica reports that Google was prepared to include fingerprint scanner support for both the Nexus 6 and Android Lollipop, although a commit message filed through Android Open Source Project (AOSP) in late August called for removal of that support on “Shamu,” the internal codename for what ultimately became the Nexus 6. The commit simply read “shamu: remove fingerprint support.”

Nexus 6 now available from US Cellular in Blue & White, 32 GB & 64 GB

The Nexus 6, which is still fairly hard to find in-stock, is now available from US Cellular. Interestingly, while most carriers are offering only the Midnight Blue model at the current time, US Cellular currently has listed—and in-stock–both the white and blue varieties of the device in both  32 GB and 64 GB capacities.

Both Motorola and Google Play are currently sold out of the device, so the only way to order one at all at the current time is via a carrier. The carriers that are currently carrying the device are T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, and US Cellular—and with today’s addition, the only one missing is Verizon.

You can get the Nexus 6 from US Cellular or $199.99 on a two-year contract, or you can pay $33 monthly for the phone with a $0 down payment. Or if you use US Cellular but looking to get an unlocked Nexus 6, be sure to check the Play Store every Wednesday for more stock to be added.

Nexus 6 launches in UK on O2 while T-Mobile Nexus 9 launch reportedly delayed

The launches of Google’s new Nexus devices have been kind of a mess to say the least, and while more people have gotten the opportunity to purchase them because they’re being launched on more carriers, this also means that the rollout wasn’t as simple as just listing them on Google Play. But as of today, some amount of progress is being made, and those in the UK now have a chance to get their hands on the Nexus 6 via O2. Sadly, though, the launch of the Nexus 9 on T-Mobile in the U.S. has hit a bit of a snag, being delayed for an unknown amount of time.

Pinć $99 VR headset brings its Minority Report-style user interfaces to Android, preorders now live

Site default logo image

I first got my hands on Pinć (pronounced Pinch) last month when the company gave me a tech demo of its still-in-development VR headset/smartphone case that utilizes Minority Report-style user interfaces. The company initially opened up preorders for the $99 accessory for iPhones, but today it’s making the Android version official by offering Android devs the same opportunity to preorder the hardware ahead of an official launch next summer.

Rumor: Motorola working on a new 5.9-inch ‘Droid’ phablet, although could ditch Droid name

According some speculation from DroidForums, Motorola is working on a new “Droid” phone that’s largely based physically on the Nexus 6, but is going to have specs that make Google’s latest smartphone look pale in comparison. The device is said to sport the same 5.9-inch QHD display as the Nexus 6, but will come with a next generation Snapdragon 810 processor. The most interesting part of this rumor, and part of what actually helps us believe its legitimacy, is that the source claims this phone might not be a “Droid” at all, and that it might just be another Motorola-branded alternative.

Nexus 6 teardown reveals a ton of screws, but it’s a win for repairability

Site default logo image

Following its ritual teardown of the Google’s new HTC-made Nexus 9 tablet earlier this month, today our friends over at iFixit have torn apart Google’s new Nexus 6 smartphone made by Motorola. While the Nexus 6 scores a decent repairability score— 7 out of 10, which is on par w/ the new iPhone 6 Plus— it does have some shortcomings that you’ll want to be aware of before cracking into your phone for repairs.

AT&T’s Nexus 6 stock reportedly being sent back due to software bug (update)

Site default logo image

AT&T retail stores are reportedly being told to send back their first shipments of Google’s Nexus 6 due to a software bug identified by Motorola. The noted issues with this glitch are a blacked out screen and trouble connecting to the carrier’s service. Motorola Mobility is said to be working on restocking Ma Bell’s inventory with replacement devices, however this will likely have an impact on the handset’s availability.

AT&T rumored to include its branding on Nexus 6 back

According to a recent rumor, AT&T plans to include its carrier branding on the back of the Nexus 6 (via Android Police). The image, taken from AT&T’s Business Direct page, shows the AT&T branding just below the beginning of “NEXUS” on the non-removable back. It’s not totally unsightly, but most people who buy a Nexus device expect it to include the Nexus branding, the manufacturer’s branding, and nothing else.

Google Nexus 6 vs Nexus 5 – Full comparison (Video)

It’s hard to believe that the Nexus 6 is the Nexus 5’s successor. There’s a huge difference between these two devices in almost every department, but this year you’ll pay for those changes. Today we’re comparing the Motorola-made Google Nexus 6 to the LG-made Nexus 5.

The Nexus 5 was a steal of a deal when it was first released. In fact it’s still a great device. For the money, it’s hard to find a comparable device with the same software experience. The Nexus 5 is loaded up with Android 5.0 Lollipop (update is coming soon) and even after being outdated by better specifications and other smartphones on the market, it still runs like a boss.

With the Nexus 6, you’re getting the latest and greatest that this industry has to offer. It’s also running Android 5.0 Lollipop and overall will offer the same exact software interface and features as its predecessor. With both of these devices, you’re getting a pure Android experience, just as Google intended it to be. Does the Nexus 6 bring enough to the table to justify the difference in price? Well, let’s get right into the comparison and find out…

Review: Google’s Nexus 6 sets a new standard for Android devices (Video)

Demand for Nexus devices has always been crazy, but this year Google took it a step further in every department and created somewhat of a super-smartphone. Most of what makes the Nexus 6 so great stems from its pure Android experience. Essentially, you’re experiencing this mobile OS exactly as it was crafted and straight from the source.

Because of Android’s openness, many smartphone makers dilute Android with their own custom skins. This is mostly great for consumers as skins add features that help create the core concepts of devices such as Samsung’s Galaxy Note line, but there’s almost always a tradeoff. You’re sacrificing overall speed and fluidity thanks to the resources being consumed.

Google’s Nexus lineup is a series of devices without all of the added bulk. This is the cleanest Android experience you can find. While it may not be as feature-rich when compared to other devices and their skins, it might be the best Android experience you can get…
