Moto X4

Remember the Nexus 5X? That was an excellent phone for a fair bit, and then it suddenly wasn’t thanks to failing components which eventually caused it to fly under the radar. For good reason, Google has long been handing out replacements for this device to frustrated owners, but it’s recently started doing so with the Moto X4.

Back in 2014, the original Moto X quickly became my favorite phone on the market for its uniquely customizable design and clean, yet intuitive software. The Moto Maker service allowed buyers to choose the phone’s colors (and build materials on later models), add a printed signature to the back, and even include a message on the bootscreen.

The new Moto X4 does none of that, and while ditching Moto Maker is definitely a bummer for longtime fans like myself, that doesn’t stop the X4 from being one of the best values around.

It’s been a while now, but a few years back, the Moto X was my favorite line of smartphones. I loved the close-to-stock software, and having the ability to choose whatever colors and materials my phone was made of; it really gave off the feeling of a phone tailor-made for you, and only you.

After a two-year hiatus, Motorola is finally refreshing its enthusiast brand with the Moto X4, that ditches my beloved Moto Maker but brings a clean and familiar software experience and a much more modern design.

Motorola’s Moto X4 is a pretty interesting device, bridging the gap between mid-range specifications and a premium build. It recently made its US debut on Project Fi as part of the Android One program, but today it’s joining Amazon’s collection of Prime Exclusive phones.

Announced last month, Project Fi was expected to begin shipping the Moto X4 for those who pre-ordered sometime this week. However, the first Android One device in the US has now been delayed due to production issues.

Back in June, Project Fi unceremoniously announced via Twitter that a mid-tier device that supports Google’s MVNO service would be coming soon. This was in line with our reporting from earlier in the year that noted the existence of such a phone with Android One branding and how it’s possibly the 2017 Moto X.

Today, Google confirmed that the Moto X4 announced last month at IFA 2017 will be the first non-Nexus or Pixel device to officially work on Project Fi.
