LG G4c unboxing and G4 head-to-head comparison [Video]

In many ways, the LG G4c is a mini version of the LG G4. Sadly, unlike Sony’s Compact series smartphones, it’s not a small phone with flagship specs. It’s less powerful, has a lower resolution screen and a smaller battery than the high-end G4. But all of that is reflected in the price difference. We’ve unboxed the device and filmed a brief comparison between the G4c and the LG G4…

LG joins Google and Samsung in committing to monthly security updates following Stagefright discovery

Site default logo image

The major Android manufacturers seem to at last be getting serious about security. Following the recent discovery of the Stagefright vulnerability, Google announced that it would commit to issuing monthly security updates to Nexus devices for at least three years. Samsung yesterday said that it too would do the same, though without stating how long it would continue to support older devices. LG has now joined in, reports Wired.

LG will be providing security updates on a monthly basis which carriers will then be able to make available to customers immediately.

Other manufacturers have also responded quickly to Stagefright, with HTC, Sony and Android One among the groups to be issuing patches …

Kantar: Samsung and LG account for 78% of US Android smartphone sales

Consumer insights and research firm Kantar Worldpanel has released its smartphone sales data for the second quarter of 2015, which runs from April through June, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag for Android. Growth in the United States and China, but declines in Europe. Android also saw market consolidation stateside during the three month period.

Let’s get the bad news out of the way. In the second quarter, Kantar says Android posted its “strongest year-on-year share drop in Germany” since the beginning of 2015. 81% of all smartphones sold in Germany during the same period last year were powered by Android, compared to 75% this year — other smartphone operating systems have seen gains in the country during the same period.

IDC: Samsung loses tablet share to Lenovo and others while overall market shrinks

Site default logo image

While Apple’s iPad continues to lead the tablet market, according to new data from IDC, its marketshare has dropped a few points year-over-year, and the overall market for tablets saw negative growth, based on units shipped globally. That’s according to second quarter 2015 unit shipments and marketshare over the same quarter a year ago, as Apple shipped 10.9 million units versus 13.3 million units during the second quarter of 2014. While the iPad continues to lead in the tablet space, IDC’s data shows Apple’s market share dropping nearly 3 points from 27.7% to 24.5%.

Samsung, the number two player in the tablet space, similarly saw declines in both units shipped and market share from Q2 2014 to Q2 2015. The Korean company slipped by a million tablets during the quarter year-over-year, falling from 8.6 million units to 7.6 million units, while its market share dropped a point from 18% to 17% …

LG cites “extremely challenging environment” and iPhone competition as mobile division barely breaks even

Site default logo image

LG cited “an extremely challenging environment” for premium smartphones as the reason for posting a net operating profit of just 200M won ($172k) for its mobile division – a number put into stark perspective by Engadget as a profit of just 1.2 cents per phone. LG specifically singled out competition from the iPhone as a factor.

While year-on-year smartphone shipments were down 3%, it did achieve a tiny 1% increase in revenue, but said that profitability was hit by weaker demand in the premium sector in its home market of Korea. There was better news in the U.S. and Canada, however …

LG G4 promo for free microSD card, battery, and battery cradle extended through June 30

LG really wants you to try the G4, and that’s not surprising – it’s a good phone! To try and entice you to buy one, though, they’ve extended the promotion they’re running through the 30th of this month.

If you buy a G4 and receive it anytime from now through the 30th, LG will give you a 32GB microSD card, an extra 3,000mAh removable battery, and a battery cradle so you can charge both of your batteries at the same time, all for free. All you have to do is visit this page and give LG some basic information like the IMEI/MEID of your phone and where you bought it from. The retail and carrier partners working with LG on this promo include AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, U.S. Cellular, Best Buy, and Amazon.

The LG G4 doesn’t look too dissimilar from its predecessor on the outside, but on the inside it’s packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor (dual-core 1.8Ghz and a quad-core 1.44), the Adreno 418 GPU, a 3,000mAh battery, and 3GB of RAM. It also has a 5.5-inch display just like the G3, but the display is now a 2560 x 1440 IPS Quantum panel that’s very rich in color, brightness, and contrast, with an overall look that’s absolutely stunning. It’s worth checking out our review (which you can find here) for the full hands-on.
