LG G5 purportedly shown in dummy shell as cases surface for the unreleased device

Site default logo image

The LG G4 was one of the best phones of 2015, filled with drool-worthy specs, excluding a metal build. With the 2016 rendition of the LG G5, rumors are pointing to a change in that. A new report from DroidLife claims that a source sent images of an LG prototype, most likely being that of the LG G5. The proposed G5 is in a protective casing in the images below, concealing any branding, however.

LG sends out invites for its Mobile World Congress event on February 21st

Mobile World Congress is still more than a month away, but that’s not keeping LG from sending out invitations to its upcoming press event in Barcelona. The company’s keynote is scheduled for February 21st, according to the invite, at 14:00 local time. Beyond that, though, there’s not much to learn here. The invite shows what looks to be a jack-in-the-box along with the slogan “Play begins.”…

First devices that use Google’s Brillo and Weave launch at CES 2016

The Internet of Things is quickly shaping up to a big story at CES 2016. Numerous internet connected gadgets for the home will be announced over the next few days. Many of them are using the Brillo and Weave standards that Google announced last year. The former is basically a stripped down version of Android for IoT devices, while the latter is a language devices can use to talk to one another.

LG announces new K7 and K10 mid-range smartphones

LG has shown its hand at Vegas this year and announced a couple of new mid-tier smartphones for the budget-conscious consumer at CES 2016. LG claims that both of the new devices have been inspired by nature, and are the first to offer the company’s ‘glossy pebble’ design language which is aimed at a younger target market. LG adds funky-looking hub to its SmartThinQ home automation system

As home automation devices proliferate, most tech companies seem to have decided that wirelessly connecting them up to a central hub is the best way to enable us to keep them all under control. Apple’s HomeKit platform uses the Apple TV as its central box, and Samsung has its SmartThings Hub.

LG is now following suit, pre-announcing the SmartThinQ Hub it plans to formally launch at CES. Interestingly, the device – which looks similar to the Amazon Echo – has a built-in display, which the company says can display alerts as well as allow direct control of devices without using your smartphone.

LG SmartThinQ Hub serves as a gateway to smart sensors and connected appliances in the home but is more than that, with the ability to display reminders from personal calendars and stream music from its built-in speaker. The elegantly designed SmartThinQ Hub includes a 3.5-inch color LCD display and connects to a smartphone app to facilitate two way communication with smart appliances and smart sensors in the home.

LG also offers SmartThinQ sensors, which aim to turn dumb appliances into smart ones by using things like vibration to allow a washing-machine to signal when a wash is complete.

The company hasn’t yet announced a price, but Samsung’s SmartThings Hub costs $99, so is likely to be in the same kind of range.

Original LG Watch Urbane price drops down to just $199

Back when it first launched, the LG Watch Urbane drew a lot of attention to itself thanks to its striking appearance. The round-faced chunky metal smartwatch didn’t look like anything else on the Android Wear market. If you’re still looking for a good value smartwatch, this could be the way to go. If you’re quick you snag the LG Watch Urbane for just $199 (down from $349) in one of today’s Lightning Deals. The deal ends in less than two hours (from time of typing). If you don’t manage to grab it, you can head on over to Rakuten where you can get the same deal on the silver model.

Feature highlights:

  • 1.3″ Full Circle P-OLED Display with Gorilla Glass 3 and Full Metal Body with Screw-Less Back Cover
  • Compatible with most devices with an Android 4.3 or later operating system
  • Fitness Integration with Built-In Continuous Heart Rate Monitor and syncs with sensors and applications for real time health and fitness data
  • Environmental Biosensors – detects and tracks Barometric Pressure, Gyroscopic Movements, Accelerometer, Geomagnetic Sensor, PPG Heart Rate Monitor
  • Music Streaming – stream music stored in the internal memory to a compatible Bluetooth device. Please note: The watch can be used only to receive notifications and accept/reject calls. Once accepted, you must then use your phone to talk.

LG’s upcoming speaker systems have built-in Google Cast support, will launch at CES 2016

LG has unveiled a new range of audio products for both home entertainment and for parties. As Google fans, it’s the home entertainment range we’re most interested in, and that’s because the company’s new sound bar systems include baked-in support for Google Cast. The SH8, SH7 and SH6 sound bars will be shown off in more depth at CES next month, and come with a boatload of wireless connectivity options…

PSA: Affordable LG Class smartphone coming to more countries as LG Zero

Back in September, LG announced a brand new all-metal entry-level smartphone named the LG Class. The idea was to bring a more premium looking device to customers with limited budgets. With its quad-core processor, 5-inch HD display and Lollipop-based OS, the smartphone certainly promised to be decent. Today, the Korean manufacturer has announced that the phone will be coming to more markets, albeit with a different name.

Opinion: LG V10 is a dual-screened, tri-camera beast of a phone, but is that what you want?

I used a Nexus 5X throughout most of October (and was very frustrated with it), but earlier this week the LG V10 showed up at my doorstep — and I just had to give it a shot for a couple weeks. Although my opinion may be skewed thanks to my less than joyful experience with the 5X, I actually found the LG V10 to be a contender for best handset I’ve used this year. It’s huge and heavy, yes, but at least for me, it’s more than feature-complete enough. And it’s especially great when you ditch LG’s software…

LG: Faulty display component led to cancellation of Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE release

Last week, LG abruptly announced it was canceling the launch of its Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE indefinitely, citing an unidentified hardware problem that directly affected the day-to-day functionality of the device. Now, Telegraph has obtained a statement from LG in which the company reveals the hardware issue plaguing its LTE-capable watch relates to the display.

Update: LG has now acknowledged the issue and says that it is canceling the rollout of the device worldwide. It also is unsure if it will be available at any point in the future.

AT&T today appears to have started notifying customers that a quality issue has occurred with the recently launched LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition. According to sources, AT&T has notified its retail stores and customers that those who purchased the latest Watch Urbane are eligible for a refund due to the “quality issue.”

LG announces mobile payment service to compete with Apple, Google and Samsung

The mobile payments industry is getting more crowded by the month. Early this morning, LG confirmed on its Facebook page that it will be entering the market with LG Pay, and has signed up a couple of Korean partners to do so. The company has joined forces with Shinhan Card and KB Kookmin Card in its home country, but didn’t say when the service is going live, or when it’ll expand to international markets.

The service will work on most LG phones, new or old. Although the company has been light on detail, we’re assuming that means those with built in NFC. Although, conceivably, it could be like Samsung Pay in that it works with both contactless NFC card readers as well as traditional Magstrip ones. Like Samsung and Apple, the service will only work on its own devices and isn’t cross-platform or cross-manufacturer.

Although we’re not surprised that LG has decided to follow in the example of Sammy, it’s still bemusing that any Android OEM should seek to release their own payment system when Android Pay is already here and will eventually work on most devices as long as they have an NFC antenna.

We’re skeptical of LG’s chances of success in a crowded market, but you can be sure that — in the future — LG’s mobile payment app will become yet another piece of bloatware to add to an already bursting collection of unnecessary duplicate apps and services.

LG Smart TVs gaining access to Google Play Movies & TV

LG says that its line of webOS and NetCast 4.0 and 4.5 smart TVs are getting access to Google Play Movies & TV. With access to this service, users will be able to watch previously bought movies and shows as well as buy new ones from the Play Store.

Users will also be able to start watching content on their LG Smart TVs resume watching later from their smartphone, tablet or PC, LG said a press release.

The ability to buy and watch movies will be rolling out to LG Smart TVs in 104 countries starting this month, while the TV service will first roll out to US, Canada, UK, and Australia.

‘Google Play Movies & TV’ Brings Great Content to LG Smart TVs, PCs, Smartphones

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Nov. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Starting this month, U.S. owners of LG Smart TVs will be able to enjoy thousands of movies and TV shows through “Google Play Movies & TV.” Compatible with LG’s industry-leading webOS Smart TV platform (as well as its earlier NetCast 4.0 and 4.5), Google Play Movies & TV will offer timeless classics, new releases, independent films and cult favorites in both HD and SD formats.

With Google Play Movies & TV, viewers can rent or buy from among thousands of movies or TV shows from major Hollywood studios. And because all the content originates from the cloud, viewers can begin watching on their LG Smart TVs at home and resume watching from where they left off the next day on their smartphone, tablet or PC.

“The smart TV market is growing rapidly and with that comes a tremendous demand for fresher, higher-quality content,” said In-kyu Lee, senior vice president and head of the TV and monitor division at the LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “Meeting this demand is LG’s highest priority, matched only by our desire to provide the best possible viewing experience on our TV products with the webOS platform. Our close partnership with Google will go a long way toward fulfilling the high expectations of LG Smart TV owners.”

Google Play Movies will become available starting this month on LG Smart TVs in 104 countries with the TV service rolling out initially in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.
