The redesigned Google Weather app on Android is down this afternoon (PT). This has happened before but it’s far from a common occurrence. 

Google already surfaces air quality in a number of ways, and it’s now being added to the Weather card in Search results.

Back in December, Google started rolling out a dedicated “Weather” icon that appeared in the app grid on Pixel phones and tablets. In recent days, this shortcut has been removed.

Over the course of 2023, Google launched a new Weather app on Pixel phones with a nice new design and some additional features. After extending past Pixel in small tests last year, Google seems to now be making the redesigned Google Weather app widely available on Android.

To coincide with the Android 12 push and Material You, Google introduced a pair of weather widgets for Pixel in 2021. With the Android 15 Beta, the exclusive Pixel nature of these weather widgets has been enshrined.

The new Google Weather app made its debut last year on Pixel phones with a wonderful new design, and now the icons from that revamp seem to be coming to At a Glance and weather widgets.

Google Weather rolled out to all Pixel phones in October, and the redesign is now appearing on Samsung and other Android devices. 

The redesigned Weather experience that’s currently exclusive to Google devices is quite nice, but should really be its own app. Google is slowly getting there by adding a dedicated “Weather” shortcut that appears like any other app on Pixel. 

Google did a pretty good job redesigning the Weather experience on Android. It’s modern and has a straightforward layout that shows what’s coming up in the next few hours and days all on one screen. 

Besides a redesign, the most interesting part of the updated Weather experience for Pixel is “Google Nowcast” for real-time 12-hour precipitation forecasts. Google today detailed the MetNet-3 deep learning model behind it, which is also powering weather features in Google Search.

Google Clock 7.6 fully rolled out with Pixel Watch alarm sync this week, and now the weather integration is seeing wider — but not full — availability on the Pixel 8 series and Android 14 QPR1.

With the Pixel Tablet and Fold, Google introduced a redesign of the Weather app, and other phones are now beginning to see it.

With Android 14 QPR1 Beta 2, a Google Weather experience is now integrated with the Google Clock app.

Google Weather is due for a big upgrade on Android that brings a Material You redesign and Nowcast. Until it drops Pixel Tablet and Fold exclusivity, Google is also updating other parts of the experience and crowdsourcing weather conditions.

The launch of the Pixel Tablet and Fold also brings a Material You redesign of Google Weather. This revamp, which will later come to other devices, features “Google Nowcast” for more accurate rain, hail, and snow predictions.

As teased at I/O 2023 last month, Google Weather is getting a Material You redesign, and it’s appearing first on the Pixel Tablet.

We already know what the new Google Weather will look like on phones, tablets, and foldables, and now we’re learning that it should be a standalone app.

We’ve been tracking the new Google Weather for the past two weeks, and our best look at the redesign is on a Pixel Fold.

In announcing the Pixel Tablet and Fold, Google emphasized that over 50 of its apps have been updated for large screens. Many of the tablet redesigns have already rolled out, with a few more coming to benefit Google Calendar, Weather, and the Play Store.

Android’s Weather experience in 2021 got a Google Material Theme redesign just as Material You was widely rolling out to other first-party apps. Google Weather is now set for a redesign with Material You elements.
