Google Pixel 4 – Cameras

For the first time in the history of the Pixel series of phones, the Pixel 4 will feature multiple rear-facing cameras. Among these, we’ve confirmed that there will be a 12MP main sensor along with a 16MP telephoto camera. This telephoto lens, combined with the Google Camera app’s excellent Super Res Zoom feature that first premiered on the Pixel 3, should make for exceptional long-distance photos on the Pixel 4.

On the software side of things, we’ve learned that Google has planned at least two major camera updates for the Google Pixel 4. The first of these is the inclusion of a new “Motion Mode” intended for taking DSLR-like photos with motion blur. We’re not yet sure if this is the same as the “McFly Mode” we’ve been tracking in the Google Camera app. The other planned improvement to the Pixel 4 camera is a massive upgrade to Night Sight to make it ready for astrophotography.

Google Pixel 4 – Release Date

The Pixel 4 has not yet been given a proper release date, but a leaked Verizon timeline points to an October release, just like most Pixel flagships. The company likely won’t share an official release date for the Pixel 4 until their fall hardware event.

Invitations to the Made by Google 2019 hardware event have gone out, and we now know that the event will take place on October 15th.

Google Pixel 4 – Leaks

Just like the Pixel 3 before it, the Pixel 4 is one of the most leaked phones in recent history. Our Ben Schoon has collected the countless leaks into one massive historical record for your convenience.

Google has a lot of ways to gather data on users, but likely in preparation for the Pixel 4, the company has a new method in place. Apparently, Google employees are stopping random people in the street and giving them $5 gift cards in exchange for their face data, probably to train models for the Pixel 4’s facial recognition.

As expected, leaked Verizon timeline suggests Pixel 4 will launch in October

Google Pixel 4

There’s been little reason to think that the Pixel 4 would deviate from Google’s typical launch schedule, until the company dropped an official image months ahead of time. That’s got some thinking that Google might drop the Pixel 4 a bit earlier, but a leaked Verizon timeline suggests that the release date of Google’s next flagship will be just as we always expected.

Pixel 3 Android Camera

Last week, we were treated to the first appearance of the Google Pixel 4 inside the Android Open Source Project (or AOSP), which gave us a fairly clear indicator that the device is in-development and possibly already in some (but not all) Google developers’ hands. Today, the Google Pixel 4 has surfaced again in AOSP, this time side-by-side with the continuously-leaked Pixel 3a.

Comment: Using the Galaxy S10 reminds me where Google needs to improve with the Pixel 4

samsung galaxy s10 android

Since its October unveiling, the Pixel 3 XL has been the phone consistently in my pocket. This week, though, I’ve finally got my hands on the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10e. Our (admittedly late) reviews will be going up soon, but just a day with the Galaxy S10 has already given me a few thoughts on where Google needs to take the Pixel 4.

It’s already time to start ignoring blatantly fake Google Pixel 4 leaks

Google Pixel 3

Yes, it’s already that time. The Google Pixel 4, or whatever it’s called, is more than half a year away, but very bad blogs (as they do) are already going in for the kill — shamelessly capitalizing on some sweet clicks with their “leaks”. A blog post from one of those websites today (which I will not link) has been making the rounds claiming an “exclusive” about Google’s next flagship. It’s not one.
