Google Pixel 3 re-review: 6 months with the pinnacle of Android and smartphone cameras [Video]

Pixel 3 XL re-review LTE

Make no mistake, we’re most definitely a partisan group at NewGeekGuide when it comes to the Google Pixel 3. Being able to pick up a device that’s been created as Google intended is the core reason that the Pixel line is so revered — and that industry-leading camera is most definitely a reason too.

The monthly Android security patch continues to deliver functional updates to the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. In April, Google addressed a complaint related to the screen flashing bright white when waking from the ambient display. There are also connectivity-related fixes, even for the original Pixel.

Hands-on: Belkin’s Boost-Up fast wireless charger is a solid Pixel Stand alternative for Pixel 3 [Video]

Google’s Pixel 3 is the first device since the Nexus 6 from the company to offer wireless charging, and that functionality was sorely missed. Its return didn’t come without a catch, though. To enable a 10W fast wireless charger to work with the Pixel 3, Google uses a proprietary standard, and lately, I’ve been checking out one of the first third-party options from Belkin.

Cam Compare: Pixel 3 vs P30 Pro – Setting the night shooting standard [Video]

The Huawei P30 Pro looks to be a real camera contender. It’s racked up the highest DxOMark score ever seen with a total score of 112 — and that’s with four rear-facing cameras. Meanwhile, the 6-month-old Pixel 3 only has one rear-facing camera that is backed up by some of the best post-processing on the entire market. But how do they stack up against one another?

Hidden setting in Android Q lets you remap Active Edge on Pixel 2, Pixel 3

The Active Edge feature is a neat addition to the Pixel 2 and Pixel 3, allowing both devices to go without a dedicated Google Assistant button. Should you be willing to root or install a third-party app, a new hidden setting gives you the ability to reassign the squeeze function to another assistant on your Pixel 2 or Pixel 3 handset.

Nearly 6 months later, there are still hardly any alternatives to the Pixel Stand for Pixel 3 fast wireless charging

As much as I love my Pixel 3 XL, I do have qualms with it. I wish it had more RAM, I wish the camera app wasn’t so finicky, and I also wish it worked with more wireless chargers. Right now, the Pixel Stand is the only Pixel 3 fast wireless charger. With nearly 6 months past, where are all the third-party options?

Google is now taking mail-in repairs for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL

Google ramping gChips India

For a long time, the only way you could get your Google Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL fixed was through one of Google’s external repair partners — which for most people meant uBreakiFix. But as our Kyle noted last fall, the experience at uBreakiFix was abysmal at first, enough so that he found the situation for repairing his Pixel 3 to be essentially hopeless. No longer: Google is now doing first-party repairs for the Pixel 3.

Hands-on: Moment lenses cost a bit more now, but they still make a great Pixel 3 camera companion [Gallery]

Google’s work in smartphone cameras is quite simply amazing. Between HDR+ and the black magic that is Night Sight, it’s unparalleled and is a huge reason why the phone sits in my pocket daily. However, it still lacks a lot of the flexibility of a traditional camera. That’s where Moment lenses come in – here’s what they can do with the Google Pixel 3.
