Google Fi

For I/O, Google has a long track record of giveaways that help the developers in attendance take advantage of all the announcements. For the past two years, the Assistant focus was accompanied by Home devices. For I/O 2019, the Pixel 3a is likely the giveaway.
Google Fi last month celebrated its fourth anniversary with 50% off the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, while iOS users this week gained visual voicemail. The Google MVNO is now dealing with customers financing their Fi purchases being charged the full price of a phone.
Last November, Google’s MVNO dropped the “Project” status and added support for many more phones. Google Fi is available on iPhones, but with limitations that require you to tweak some settings for MMS and no support for voicemail in the native Phone client. An update to the Google Fi app today adds visual voicemail to iOS.
Ahead of Android Q’s release later this year, many of Google’s apps are preparing dark modes to provide a uniform experience when using the operating system. The latest is Fi — hot off its 4th birthday Pixel 3 deal — and Google Calendar for Android.
Project Fi launched on April 22, 2015 with the Nexus 6 being the first device to support the Google MVNO. All subsequent Nexus and Pixel phones have worked on the cellular service, with Designed for Fi devices from third-party OEMs launching in 2017. To celebrate its 4th anniversary, a Fi birthday Pixel 3 deal discounts the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL by 50% off.
Back in February, Google Fi dropped the Pixel 2 XL, but added the Moto G7 in March. Over the past few days, the MVNO online store has stopped selling the Android One Moto X4, and LG’s G7 and V35 ThinQ.
Over the past 24 hours, Google Fi customers have been encountering issues with activating devices on their accounts. The widespread issue is caused by a problem on T-Mobile’s end, and it’s affecting other MVNOs as well.
With last November’s rebrand, Google Fi is available for most Android devices and iPhones. The latest promotion involves a free month of service when new subscribers bring their own device to the MVNO.
Announced last month as Lenovo-owned Motorola’s latest mid-range device, the Moto G7 is now available for pre-order from the Google Fi store. It’s the third “Designed for Fi” phone from Moto and comes in at $249.
As an MVNO, improvements to Google Fi’s network are primarily dependent on partners upgrading their networks. In the case of 5G, Sprint detailed today how it will be making that faster service available through the Google cellular offering.
After this week’s SIM card expansion to Best Buy stores around the country, Google Fi is again discounting the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL by $150. It joins other deals on all Moto and LG devices on the MVNO store.
Google is now selling Google Fi SIM cards at more than 500 Best Buy locations around the United States, the Mountain View company announced today. The deal is pretty straightforward: SIMs cost $10, and you get a $10 service credit on Fi upon activation, making them essentially free.
So you’re considering switching to Google’s cellular carrier, eh? (Well, technically, it’s an MVNO or “mobile virtual network operator,” which basically means they’re renting space from other carriers to provide their own service.) But alas, if you’re debating whether or not you want to hop over to Google Fi, one thing’s for certain: You’re going to need a phone. Which phones work with Google Fi?
Back in November, Google Fi received a big rebrand that dropped the “Project” status and added official support for other Android devices and iPhones. The best Google MVNO experience is found on “Designed for Fi” phones with the Moto G7 coming soon, while the Fi store has stopped selling the Pixel 2 XL.
The latest Made by Google phones have seen a number of discounts since launch from Black Friday to the winter holidays. With 2019 well underway, both the Google Store and Google Fi are discounting the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL by $150.
Back in December, Project Fi was rebranded to Google Fi as part of wider availability on both Android and iOS. The Google MVNO is now supporting RCS Chat on its network and devices, as well as upgrading international data speeds to LTE.
Google Fi has had a big month — if not year — after dropping its “Project” status and expanding to all Android devices and the iPhone. However, the Google MVNO is still sticking to holiday traditions with a free photo book from Google Photos for subscribers.
In addition to a rebrand and expanded Android and iOS availability, Google Fi yesterday gained the Google Material Theme on mobile and the web. On Android, the general layout and functionality is unchanged, but the new design is particularly whimsical and befitting of the MVNO’s simplicity.
Back in 2015, Project Fi launched as Google’s take on cellular service and has over the years added new features, as well as support for more phones. As suggested earlier this month, the MVNO is now simply called Google Fi and vastly expanding its Android device compatibility and supporting iPhones.
Last year, we were told by a source that Google’s Project Fi MVNO would “soon” — joining many other Google apps and services — be rebranded as simply Google Fi. Now, thanks to a promotional card found in a Google Pixel retail box, we see what the new logo and branding looks like.
