Pixel owners are getting quick access to AI Mode via the Google Search bar that’s built into the Pixel Launcher.

After previewing at I/O 2025, Google is beginning to test AI Mode’s new “Search Live” experience. Powered by Project Astra (just like Gemini Live), it lets you have a real-time conversation with Google. 

At I/O 2025, Google previewed a number of upcoming features for AI Mode, and the ability to create interactive charts is now in testing.

Ahead of Search Live, Google is giving AI Mode a straightforward voice input feature that has a particularly delightful animation.

Even with both products eventually offering a “Live” feature, I think the difference between the Gemini app and AI in Google Search is now pretty clear. However, having two products that do similar things is inelegant, and might pose some confusion for most users.

The AI takeover of Search is in full swing, especially as Google’s new AI Mode is going live for all US users. But for publishers, this continues the existential crisis around how Google Search is changing, with a new statement calling AI Mode “the definition of theft” while legal documents reveal that Google did consider opt out controls that ultimately weren’t implemented.

Google just announced a new AI mode for shopping with two big new features. The AI Mode will give users the option to try clothes on virtually, and if it’s a fit, the AI model will buy them for you.

Google is teasing new features for AI Mode, including the ability for it to act as an agent of the web on your behalf, completing research in the background to save you time, and it looks pretty handy.

Google is bringing its new AI Mode in Search to all users in the United States, and bringing a ton of new features, including camera access, a custom version of Gemini under the hood, Gmail integration, and more.

With all users stateside able to test, the shortcut for launching AI Mode is now in the Google app’s Search bar on Android and iOS.

As AI continues to be a core focus of its search experience, Google appears to now be testing the replacement of its iconic “I’m Feeling Lucky” button with a new button for its AI Mode.

Last month, AI Mode gained Google Lens integration (as depicted above) to power multimodal search. Google is now working on “Live for AI Mode.” 

Besides the widget shortcut, Google is making AI Mode faster to access with one-tap search on Android and iOS.

After adding multimodal Lens search on Android and iOS last month, Google is updating AI Mode with more features while dropping the US waitlist for immediate sign-up.

As work on AI Mode continues, Google is adding a prominent shortcut for it on Android, while a sleek header redesign is being tested.

As AI Mode testing continues, Google is trialing a new way to launch the generative experience from the Search bar on Android.

AI Mode entered testing a month ago and Google is now expanding access to free Labs users, as well as adding Lens visual search.

Google announced the new Search AI Mode at the start of March, and waitlist access is now expanding beyond Google One AI Premium to free users.

Following yesterday’s announcement, Google is rolling out early access to Search’s new AI Mode experiment for Google One AI Premium subscribers.

Google today is announcing and beginning testing on an “AI Mode” for Search. This “early experiment” lets you ask more complex questions that will be answered by an AI-generated response that takes up the entire page.

As previously spotted, Google Search is working on a new “AI Mode” that offers a “persistent place” to ask more “open-ended / exploratory questions” and get generated AI Overview-style responses. Powered by Gemini 2.0, Google has begun testing this experience with employees.
