Android Nougat’s ‘flowered’ home button animation will be tied to Google Assistant, and it looks awesome

We’ve seen several big leaks over the past few weeks in regard to the upcoming release of Android Nougat, however within those we’ve seen one common element, a “flowered” home button. Usually Google’s home button in the navigation bar is a constant icon, but in this upcoming release it looks as though that might change, and now Android Police has gotten their hands on a new GIF showing off what the animation will look like, and revealing its purpose.

Android 7.0 Nougat is apparently set for an August public release

After revealing the Android N Developer Preview back in early March, it seems we’re now getting ever closer to the public release. The final preview is here, developers are updating their apps, and OEMs are hard at work getting updates prepared for devices. That said, we haven’t heard much from Google or from leaks regarding the date of the public release until now.

Today, leakster Evan Blass says that we should be expecting the update “next month”.

Android Nougat won’t boot with malware, but non-malicious corruption may be a bigger deal

In its Android Developer’s blog, Google has explained that the company has boosted the system integrity protection in Android Nougat to prevent a compromised phone booting, or only allow it to boot in a limited capacity. This is a step up from Android Marshmallow, which carries out this check, but merely warns users and allows them to continue with the boot if they wish.

The good news, then, is that your phone will refuse to boot if infected with some types of malware, protecting your data. The bad news, says Google, is that some non-malicious data corruption may also result in a phone that won’t boot …

Nougat AMA roundup: Android team talks OEM updates, Night Mode removal, battery drain, more

The Android Engineering Team hosted a Reddit AMA this afternoon to answer technical questions after the release of the fifth and final N Developer Preview. The more developer focused Q&A session discussed some app and Nexus-specific queries, programming languages, and OEMs updating to Nougat.

There was also discussion about removing the Night Mode from the final version of Android N, battery drain, and Material Design. For developers, it is definitely worth reading through the entire thread. Due to the interest, the engineering team will consider doing more AMAs in the future.

Last call for guesses: Google to reveal the sweet Android N name today [Poll]

According to a tweet from the Android Twitter account this morning, Google is set to finally reveal what the “N” in Android N stands for today. The Android team told us a few weeks ago that we would be getting the Android N name in a “few weeks,” so this isn’t the most unexpected announcement considering it has been right at 21 days since.

This comes as we’re just over 2 weeks since the release of the fourth Android N Developer Preview, and we have one more preview to go before the final release. The last several preview releases have fallen 4 weeks apart, so it’s possible — although not necessarily likely — that the 5th preview will drop today alongside the name of the new OS.

Google purportedly redesigning navigation buttons for the final Android N release

Ever since the introduction of Material Design, its not-so-new company-wide design language, Google has changed a number of things — like, for instance, its logo — that have affected almost the entirety of its looks.

Most of them were particularly notable on Android — the software keys inside the navigation buttons, for instance, were aesthetically overhauled with Lollipop. But it looks like the company has another redesign of these buttons in mind for later this year…

VLC 2.0 launches w/ Android N support, video playlists, popup video mode, more

I remember back in the day when VLC was just the necessary media player for pretty much any Mac owner. Since then, the free and open source cross-platform multimedia player has expanded beyond Mac and PC to mobile devices running Android and iOS. Today, the VideoLAN organization has pushed out VLC for Android 2.0, and it’s probably the app’s biggest release since its first out-of-beta release in February of last year
