Android 7.0 Nougat

There’s going to be a lot of new UI designs on Google’s upcoming Pixel devices, and as developers sift through the leaked Pixel system images from earlier this week, we’re starting to get our hands on some of what it includes. Just the other day we got the official Pixel wallpaper, and now we’ve got a brand new version of Google’s dialer app (via Android Police).

First available on the Pixel and Pixel XL, Android 7.1 includues several new developer APIs that let apps add new functionality like launcher icon shortcuts. Google has now announced that Android 7.1 will launch as a developer preview later this month for existing Nexus devices and a final release is planned for early December.

Google Assistant is the biggest selling point of Google’s new Pixel devices, especially since it’s an exclusive. From what we’ve seen and tried with Assistant so far, Google has something impressive here, and now you can use it on any device with Android Nougat (via XDA).

One of the biggest questions surrounding Google’s Pixel that we’ve noticed people asking about is how its Verizon exclusivity will affect it. Being the only carrier Google has partnered with, we would hope that the company had pulled some strings with Verizon to keep tight control over devices sold through the carrier. It’s been a few weeks since Google made Nougat official, and in the time since the company hasn’t pushed the update to all Nexus devices. It took until last week for the Nexus 6P’s OTA to fully roll out, and we’re still waiting on updates for the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 LTE.
