Android 7.0 Nougat

Earlier this year, we received word from OnePlus that they planned to get Nougat onto the OnePlus 3 and 3T before the end of the year. As we quickly approached the New Year, many became skeptical that this deadline would be met. Now, on the last day of 2016, Carl Pei, Co-founder of OnePlus, has announced that they will begin rolling out a stable build of OxygenOS 4.0 (Nougat) later tonight…

OnePlus said last month that the OnePlus 3 and 3T would both get Android Nougat by the end of the year. That obviously hasn’t happened for either device yet, but it’s getting closer and closer every day. Today, the former device is receiving another beta build of Nougat in the form of OxygenOS beta 10…

Google’s Pixel smartphone received a ton of praise following its announcement, including in our review, but in the time since, several hardware and software issues have been forcing many to take a second look at Google’s flagship. There have been camera issues, defects, and even some audio problems, but now another issue is starting to pop up, and it’s easily the worst yet ─ premature battery shutdowns.

All of the currently-supported Nexus and Pixel devices have received Android 7.1.1 at this point (you can find factory images at Google’s website as usual), but one device, the Nexus 6, has been mysteriously missing for a few weeks. Now, we know that the phablet from 2014 is getting its update come early next month…

Prior to the release of the Google Pixel, one of the best Android smartphones on the market was the premium, powerful, and affordable Nexus 6P. However, the reputation of that device is certainly going downhill with several issues popping up as the phone ages. Now, some Nexus 6P owners are reporting a bootloop issue on their devices.

Android skins from Chinese OEMs have always been pretty bad, and Huawei has always been one of the worst contenders. Despite releasing awesome hardware, it’s always been hard to recommend the company’s devices due to the software. With the release of Nougat, though, things are improving, and now we know when Honor 8 users can expect that update.

We’ve long hailed the Nexus 6P as one of the best Android smartphones on the market and by most measurements, that’s still very true. However, as with any phone, things start to degrade over time. That’s especially true when it comes to the battery, but something especially odd and potentially dangerous has been happening with the Nexus 6P, and Google still hasn’t fixed it.

In early November, Samsung announced the Galaxy Beta Program which allowed customers with the Galaxy S7 or S7 edge to beta test the upcoming release of Nougat. Over the last month, we have seen several updates roll out to the handsets which fixed bugs and brought more Nougat features to the phones. We are now receiving reports that a 4th major update is now showing up for those in the beta program…

While Android 7.1.1 began rolling out to Nexus and Pixel devices at the beginning of the month, users on the Android Beta Program have still been waiting for the final release. After a two week delay, the update is beginning to rollout to the Nexus 5X and 6P.

Ahead of its final release, OnePlus has just rolled out a second beta build of Android Nougat for the OnePlus 3. Oxygen OS Beta 9 takes feedback from the initial Nougat beta to squash bugs and optimize the OS before the final build goes out to all.

Android 7.1.1 began rolling out to the Pixel and Pixel XL last Monday with a number of small fixes, as well as two new Moves. Notably, compared to previous months, there was one unified build for North America, Verizon, and Europe. A new version of 7.1.1 has just been posted to the developer site and deals with fixing a connectivity issue.

It’s been a while since Android Nougat went public, but in the time since, not many OEMs have gotten around to pushing system updates to bring devices up to Google’s latest OS. With the latest monthly distribution numbers, Nougat still sits at just 0.4%, and even less can be said for the newer Android Nougat 7.1.1. Now, however, it seems like Samsung is planning to skip 7.0 and go directly to 7.1.1.

Just the other day, Google officially kicked off the rollout of the latest version of Android, 7.1.1 Nougat, to both Nexus and Pixel devices. With that update, Google brought along some new “moves” which have made a big difference to one of Google’s long available but neglected features — Ambient Display.

After releasing Android Nougat for the HTC 10 late last month, HTC is now pushing Nougat to the unlocked HTC One M9 in the US starting today.

The last distribution numbers for 2016 are in and show slow growth for 7.0 Nougat, but a big boost that makes Marshmallow the most commonly used version of Android. These numbers come as Android 7.1’s rollout will add a new API version to the list before the busy holiday season.

Update 12/27: Following a small update aimed at devices on UK carriers, Verizon has just listed a new build (NMF26U) for the Pixel and Pixel XL. This update is likely minor with release notes only mentioning security patches. Interestingly, the Google Developer site has not been updated with links to the factory image or OTA.
Following a brief developer preview, Android 7.1.1 is now available for Nexus and Pixel devices. The update brings features that have been on the Pixel since October to current Nexus and Android One devices, as well as the Pixel C. Meanwhile, the Pixel and Pixel XL gain some new Moves and other bug fixes.

A little over 4 months after its release on Nexus devices, Android Nougat is finally starting to pick up steam after some pretty dismal distribution numbers during its first couple of months. Recently we’ve seen the likes of HTC updating unlocked devices, and LG updating international and local G5 units, Samsung pushing out betas, and even Huawei sub-brand Honor working to update devices to Google’s latest OS. Today, even more devices are picking up Android Nougat.

Huawei hasn’t always been the best when it comes to software, both in terms of its skin and reliability of system updates. However, along with a massive overhaul to its UI on the Mate 9, the company appears to be pushing Android Nougat to a few of its devices just a bit quicker than usual.

OnePlus CEO Carl Pei said earlier today that the OnePlus 3’s Android Nougat release is getting priority over the many complaints people have about its touch latency issues, and it looks like he was serious. Now, the now-outdated flagship from the Chinese company is getting its first beta build of OxygenOS based on Android Nougat…

Android Nougat’s rollout has been slow, but this month it’s finally picking up steam. Recently LG released its first device with Nougat, the LG V20, and now the company is bringing its earlier flagship, the LG G5, up to date.

Update 11/29: As presumed, the Pixel and Pixel XL will also receive Android 7.1.1 this coming Monday. This confirmation comes from Canadian carrier Rogers and is labeled as ‘Bug Fixes & Security Patches.’
According to Vodafone Australia, Android 7.1.1’s consumer release to Nexus devices will coincide with next month’s security patch on December 5th. The OTA comes less than two weeks after the second Android 7.1 Developer Preview and brings Nexus phones and tablets to software parity with the Pixel and Pixel XL.

After confirming earlier this year that the device would be updated to the latest version of Android, HTC has just announced that Nougat is nearly ready for the HTC 10. The roll out should start Friday, November 26th…

Earlier this month Honor was on the lookout for beta testers for Android Nougat on the Honor 8 smartphone. After finding a handful of candidates, the company is now pushing beta builds to devices, and today we’re getting our first look.

About two months ago, Motorola confirmed it would be rolling out the latest version of Android, 7.0 Nougat, to the Moto Z family by the end of the year. Ahead of any announcement, it appears that update is rolling out to some users of the DROID edition Moto Z smartphones…
