Site default logo image

Verizon-GS5

After several weeks of trying and a bounty that exceeded $18,000, root access for Samsung’s Galaxy S5 on AT&T and Verizon has been obtained. Famed iPhone tinkerer George Hotz aka Geohot has managed to pull it off. So how does it work? To gain root access on either device, simply run a special .apk file and tap an onscreen button. That’s it. No crazy commands or lines of code.

Google rewards Pokemon prank winners with jobs, sort of

Site default logo image

Pokemon-Master

As an April Fools Day prank, Google used Google Maps to place pretend Pokemon all over the world. The company later revealed that it was rewarding people who managed to find all 150 (or 151, don’t forget Mew) pocket monsters with a special gift. A tech superpower with endless resources, what might Google be sending this skilled group of individuals? Google Play credit? A free Nexus phone or tablet? Tickets to I/O? What could it be? To congratulate people who managed to wrangle the digital beasts, Mountain View has issued a letter certifying their success, along with a set of business cards labeling them as a “Pokemon Master” at Google Inc.

Google appears to be testing 480p and 1080p resolutions for Android’s YouTube app

You-Tube-Android

Smartphone and tablet displays are only getting better, however not all mobile video software is capable of taking advantage of high-res content. For example, Android’s YouTube app gives users the option to display videos in either 360p or 720p, but this appears to be changing. People are reportedly starting to see playback options in 480p and 1080p resolutions.

Google celebrates Father’s Day with new Through Glass video

Dads Make the World Go Round [through Google Glass] - YouTube 2014-06-13 15-57-43 2014-06-13 15-57-45

Father’s Day is almost here and as a nice way to celebrate dear old dad, Google has released a new Through Glass video of proud poppas having fun with their offsprings. A sweet gesture for sure, however we also can’t help but wonder if Mountain View might be subliminally telling you to buy the old man some high-tech eyewear. While we probably just tainted this heartwarming moment, watching about 30 seconds of children having a blast with their fathers should probably bring a smile to your face.

Firefox apps are pretty much web apps mostly based on HTML5 and JavaScript. So, by rule of thumb, if an application works on Mozilla’s mobile OS, it should run without a hitch on the company’s browser. With Firefox 29 for Android users of Google’s mobile operating system can run Open Web Apps directly from their device.

OnePlus One security bug resolved, first wave of phones finally shipping

OnePlus-One-Black

Well, that didn’t take too long. After being held up by a potential security risk, the OnePlus One is apparently ready for mass consumption.

“We did choose to delay the shipment of the first phones in order to make sure the software was secure and provided the best possible user experience, a company spokesperson told Android Authority. “The CyanogenMod team worked very quickly and efficiently and the Open SSL issues have already been fixed. The first OnePlus Ones ship to early users with invites as early as tomorrow.”

So, if you’re among the those who ordered a OnePlus One through its early release program, there’s a good chance that could receive your new phone within the next few days. Better late than never, right?

Angry Birds Epic free-to-play RPG now available for Android

Angry-Birds-Epic-Android

A new Angry Birds game is available for Android, but this time things are a little different. Unlike previous installments in the series, Angry Birds Epic is a free-to-play turn-based RPG that places you in the heroic feathers of Red, Chuck and Bomb as they claw and squawk their way through epic battles against dastardly villains like King Pig, Wiz Pig and Prince Porky.

It’s a decent title for gamers who are new to RPGs, but things can get pretty challenging if you elect to skip its in-app purchase options for items and upgrades. That being said, Angry Birds Epic is a nice way to kill some free time and in its purest form it’ll only cost you 86MB of storage space.

Google shying away from Chrome address cropping

Site default logo image

google-chrome

Google appears to be rethinking its “Origin Chip” initiative that would hide complete URLs when browsing the web from Chrome. Recently, Chrome team member Peter Kasting referred to the address cropping feature as a low priority, saying “”the origin chip work is backburnered” on an issue tracking website. Under the Origin Chip, Chrome’s search bar would only display a website’s domain name, opposed to its full URL. The idea was to make web browsing less distracting.
