TCL’s Google TV lineup is about to get a fresh Android 14 update, with a couple of new features in tow.
As reported by FlatPanelsHD citing user reports, TCL is preparing a rollout of Android 14 for its last-generation Google TV sets. This is heading for, as the publication explains, TVs using the Pentonic 700 chip which includes C8K, QM8K, C7K, QM7K, C6K, QM6K, C855, C845, QM851G, C805, QM751G, and the “Frame”-like TCL NXTVISION TV, among other sets in the company’s lineup. These models all run Android 12 underneath their Google TV experience, whereas newer TCL sets are running Android 14 out of the box.
What’s new?
The Android 14 update for TCL Google TV sets appears to add a small number of new features, including HDMI 2.1 “Quick Media Switching.” This can be found through “External Inputs” in the Settings menu, and improves refresh rate switching for HDMI devices to match the content being played and limiting the “black screen” transition often seen with these devices.
Outside of that, Android 14 itself has some new energy modes for TVs, better picture-in-picture support, and some improvements for apps, but there’s nothing all that major. There are also a few tweaks to Google TV in particular, as we previously reported.
TCL has yet to formally announce this rollout, but it’s expected to start in the near future.
