Fairphone launches updated Fairbuds XL over-ear headphones alongside US debut

After announcing its US debut earlier this year, Fairphone is releasing an updated version of its Fairbuds XL over-ear headphones.

Fairphone is perhaps best known by its namesake, the repairable Fairphone smartphone. But the company has also been stepping into audio with the same repairability focus, with its 2023 Fairbuds XL now being the company’s first product available for purchase in the US via Amazon.

But, now, a 2025 revision is coming.

Fairphone this week announced that its updated Fairbuds XL will deliver “richer sound” via new 40mm drivers, while also updating the design with breathable fabric on the headband and updated ear cushions for better overall comfort. 30-hour battery life and aptX support remains unchanged, but the colors have been slightly updated. Of course, everything is still ultra-repairable too with replacement parts available, and the headphones themselves are built (in part) from recycled materials.

Fairphone explains:

With new 40 millimeter dynamic drivers, refined audio tuning, and upgraded materials, the new Fairbuds XL offers a more natural and detailed listening experience. Its updated design introduces a refined material identity that combines maturity, comfort, durability, and a sleeker style. The new headband features a breathable net fabric, while the ear cushions use a soft birdseye mesh that enhances comfort during long listening sessions. The two new colors, Forest Green and Horizon Black, give the headphones a contemporary and confident character that reflects Fairphone’s new design language.

The updated version is available for purchase now in Europe for €249 (£219 UK) and will arrive in the US “later in December” for the same $229 as the existing model.
