The smart home standard Matter is introducing support for cameras, a long awaited device type for the universal standard.
Quickly taking a step back, Matter is a smart home standard designed to allow devices to work better with your smart home ecosystem. Instead of requiring a specific app, multiple apps such as Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings can add these devices to your home and operate them.
Since the standard’s introduction, device types have mostly focused on smart lighting, plugs, sensors, switches, and more. But cameras have been one that we’ve been waiting for.
With the Matter 1.5 update, it’s finally time for cameras.
The Connectivity Standards Alliance today announced Matter 1.5 as a “major functional expansion of the standard.”
The biggest update here is support for Matter cameras. These cameras can transmit live video and audio over WebRTC with two-way communication. They’ll support both local and remote access through your smart home app of choice, and the standard will allow for more advanced features such as pan-tilt-zoom controls, detection and privacy zones, as well as both countinuous and event-based recording whether that’s local or through a cloud service.
The CSA explains:
Matter cameras support live video and audio streaming using established WebRTC technology, enabling two-way communication and both local and remote access via standard STUN and TURN protocols. The specification also defines support for multi-stream configurations, pan-tilt-zoom controls, detection and privacy zones, and flexible storage options, including continuous or event-based recording to local or cloud destinations.
This latest release enables device makers to build cameras that offer Matter-based interoperability—without limiting their ability to innovate through their own apps and services—while providing consumers with greater flexibility to combine a diverse range of camera types and price points into a coordinated home experience.
One of the first cameras with Matter 1.5 will be the Xthings Ulticam V2, which goes on sale in late December for $199. The 4K camera utilizes Gemini models for smarter detection and recognition while featuring a 160-degree FOV and optional local storage via a microSD card.

The Matter 1.5 update also includes “a revamped and unified approach to closures” including doors, windows, and more while also adding support for soil sensors that can help track moisture levels and automate watering. Energy management devices with Matter are also getting an upgrade with the ability to pull real-time data regarding pricing, carbon, and more.
