Waymo starts rolling out freeway driving in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix

After testing since last year, Waymo is ready to start rolling out freeway driving in three cities for public riders.

Coming to the San Francisco Bay Area, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, this will make Waymo trips “even more convenient and efficient.”

On the safety front, Waymo has logged millions of miles on the freeway, including testing with employees and guests.

This experience, reinforced by comprehensive testing as well as extensive operational preparation, supports the delivery of a safe and reliable service. We’ve also closely collaborated with safety officials, to seamlessly support this new phase of service.

The Waymo app will show a new card in the “My trip” tab that lets you “join the list for early access to freeway routes.” Moving forward, when taking the freeway is meaningfully faster, you will be matched with that route.

Meanwhile, Waymo today announced an expansion in the Bay Area to San Jose, thus creating a unified 260+ square mile service area. As part of this, Waymo will start to offer curbside pickup and dropoff at San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC).

Earlier this month, Waymo announced that it’s coming to Las Vegas and San Diego next year, as well as Detroit.
