Even Realities G2 smart glasses bring a ‘spatial’ display and R1 controller ring

As competitors begin to flood the smart glasses market, Even Realities has unveiled the second addition to its lineup – the Even G2 – with a new multi-layer display engine. The “holistic” smart glasses opt out of cameras and speakers, and add an improved means of interaction with a smart ring.

Even Realities’ G1 was clearly an entry point for the company. At its core, it relied on basic interaction without the bells and whistles we’re seeing in the likes of the Meta Glasses or other devices. Even without the flair, the Even G1s offered a strong display method and solid construction.

According to Even Realities, the Even G2 glasses will take a similar approach. It won’t come with cameras or speakers, which might be welcome depending on your use case. It will, however, offer up some significant improvements in visuals and optics. The battery is getting a bump in runtime, too.

The company calls the new optics engine its “Even HAO 2.0” system. Micro-LED projectors are embedded into the lenses with gradient waveguides to focus text and information into the user’s field of view. This model opts to display information in a sort of multi-layer, or “3D” method, as Even Realities puts it.

It’s referred to as a “floating spatial display” that projects visuals in prioritized layers. Even Realities says AI insights and quick prompts like notifications will appear in the first layer, whereas more pertinent information sits at the back, like navigation. Navigation that Even Realities says has improved since the last version.

The dual-layer approach is a feature that other devices have yet to implement, and it would mean users see information in different planes that appear further apart. The G1s had an option to adjust virtual distance, and this adds a whole other level to that.

The company isn’t promising XR/AR, but given how well the G1 glasses were able to project visuals consistently with its micro-LED system, the new layering aspect sounds like something Even Realities is more than capable of engineering.

On software, the company says that software has tremendously improved with a faster AI model and better apps/widgets than in the previous version.

Even Realities’ G2 can be controlled via capacitive buttons or a new approach. The company is making the R1 control ring available for users who don’t want to fiddle with the touch points on the arms of the glasses. The ring is made from ceramic and stainless steel, with a small plateaued touch point on the top. Gestures will control the paired G2 glasses, while doubling as a smart ring for basic wellness insights.

On top of the new launch, the app will have an added user-powered Even Hub. The Even Hub will be a place for developers to add third-party apps and widgets through the company’s app, as opposed to using separate programs that completely change the glasses’ UI. The Even Hub will launch “by the end of this year.”

The Even G2 smart glasses are launching today for $599. During the launch period, the R1 and other accessories will be 50% off, normally priced at an additional $249. As a “thank you” to Even G1 customers, the company is offering a free R1 smart ring when the upgraded Even G2 is purchased.
