Google Photos chain link fence removal demo finally becomes reality with conversational editing

Google Photos’ new conversational editing tool finally realizes the chain link fence removal demo that the tech giant showcased almost a decade ago.

If you’re old enough to remember the impressive chain link fence removal demo way back at IO 2017, Google Photos can now officially do what the ancient teaser promised to do just a few months after the launch of the first Pixel phone. Nine generations later and with the help of AI your Pixel phone is capable of removing all manner of obstructions from photos – including those pesky chain link fences.

Yes, Magic Editor has offered something similar, but like the generational tools in Photoshop, it is never quite perfect. Images can look a little weird with blemishes, random blurs, and all the issues that come with trying to edit with desktop-level applications. In short, it isn’t perfect, but it is absolutely fine if you want to clean up some vacation photos in a pinch.

However, countless posts have started appearing across Threads showcasing just what the new tool can do with the conversational editing tool on Pixel 10 Pro devices. Sadly, this is limited to the US right now, but some of the results are uncanny. Like those from Threads user Ronak Gandhi – which as you can see below is very impressive:

Take a closer look, and you might notice that it isn’t perfect—likely because of the lack of contrast and texture of the bark and the background fence, too. That said, it’s hard to be too harsh, given that the eagle is perfectly cut out with no sign of fence included. At least in theory, this should be the worst this tech will be, too. So, there are reasons to be excited as Gemini gets better at detecting specific obstructions.

All in all, it’s nice to finally see that Google Photos can remove fences from photos because, heck, we’ve all taken a picture of something that isn’t quite in the perfect setting. While it’s a shame it took 8 years and a massive leap in Gemini and AI progress to come to fruition…no chain link fence stands a chance now.
