YouTube TV reportedly considering dedicated ‘Sports & Broadcast’ package

Amid a number of price hikes in recent years, YouTube TV is reportedly looking to introduce a new “Sports & Broadcast” package for subscribers, but the details, and whether or not it might happen at all, are still a bit murky.

Following some recent drama around negotiations with Fox, Puck reports that YouTube TV has “discussed” a new package for “Sports & Broadcast” networks. The report claims that YouTube TV has not settled on what networks might be included in this new package, but that Fox would “fight for Fox News” to be included alongside its sports and broadcast channels.

Sources have said that YouTube TV has discussed launching a broadcast-and-sports tier, and there’s debate around what networks will be included. Fox, of course, comes to market with a much smaller group of channels than other media companies: a broadcast channel, FS1, and Fox News. If the broadcast channel goes into that tier, Fox will fight for Fox News to follow.

And therein seems to lie the hang-up with YouTube TV having these dedicated packages. Apparently, this was “an important part” of negotiations with Google.

The idea of having separate packages is not a new one, but it’s certainly a point of contention in the broadcast space. Just recently, Sling TV was sued by Disney over its “Passes” which offer access to select live channels for daily/weekend/week fees rather than monthly.

That doesn’t mean customers don’t want it, though.

It’ll be interesting to see if YouTube TV makes the change in time, but we’ll have to wait and see. Would you subscribe to a “Sports & Broadcast” package on YouTube TV?
