Google Drive ‘Suggested files’ widget gets M3 Expressive redesign

Following the “quick actions” redesign earlier this year, Google Drive for Android has now updated the “Suggested files” widget with M3 Expressive.

“Suggested files” was introduced with the wave of Material You widgets in 2021 to let you quickly access relevant files. At the time, it had a distinct two-part design with a prominent indent between the top and bottom portions. In Google Drive’s case, it’s the search field and list. (For YouTube Music’s Recently Played, it’s Now Playing and a grid of artwork.)

The Material 3 Expressive widget is one rounded rectangle with “Drive” and the app logo in the top-left corner, while you can quickly upload files and start a search (if wide enough) with the pill-shaped buttons at the right.

You then get a list of 10 Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc. Like before, each is placed in a container. The smallest configuration is 3×2, while you can have the widget take up your entire homescreen.

We’re seeing the M3 Expressive widget redesign rolled out with version 2.25.306.6 of Google Drive for Android. (It might take a moment for the account picker to appear after placing on your homescreen.)

Google Drive’s quick actions widget picked up M3 Expressive alongside Google Keep in April. The new design language quietly appeared before M3 Expressive was announced a month later. The main change involved placing everything in containers.
