After years of requests, Samsung is finally bringing DeX to the Galaxy Z Flip series, starting with the Galaxy Z Flip 7.
DeX is Samsung’s desktop-like experience on Android, and it’s evolved into a fan-favorite over the years on devices like the Galaxy S25 Ultra and the Galaxy Tab S-series. Google is even utilizing DeX as a base to build out its own native desktop version of Android, as revealed at I/O in May. But despite the horsepower built into practically every Galaxy Z Flip model, it’s never actually shipped on any of Samsung’s clamshells — until now.
There aren’t a ton of pre-availability details to work off of, but here’s what we know. Galaxy Z Flip 7 owners will be able to pair their smartphone with “a compatible screen,” which should include most computer monitors, to access “PC-like tools for enhanced multitasking.” Presumably, this will work in wired or wireless mode, though my colleague Ben Schoon says Samsung specifically mentioned plugging the phone in during an in-person briefing ahead of Unpacked.
The other catch, judging by today’s press release, is the need to flip open the phone to use it in DeX mode. I won’t lie — the idea of dropping a clamshell phone into a desktop dock and immediately switching into a full PC-like experience sounds promising, so it’s pretty disappointing you need the Flip 7 unfolded to use it this way. Still, though, likely Flip 7 owners rejoice: the S Pen might be missing on the Fold 7, but you and your fellow flip phone enthusiasts now have an entirely different productivity tool at your disposal.
Pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Flip 7, and Galaxy Watch 8 are now open through Samsung.com with up to $1,000 in trade-in values, a free storage upgrade worth up to $150, plus an additional $50 in Samsung credit when you order through NewGeekGuide’s links below.
