Qualcomm hasn’t forgotten about the mid-range SoC, and the new Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 proves that the company is still trying to bring faster and smarter AI to more devices. The Sanpdragon 7 Gen 4 makes several key improvements in performance over the previous generation.
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, released in 2023, was a key component of a few popular devices, including some from Honor and Vivo. With it, these less expensive devices are able to pack a little more of a punch, and the new version seems to be no different. The brand then went on to release the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, and is ready to bring something new to the table.
Qualcomm has officially announced the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 SoC. Inside that system is an Adreno GPU and a Kryo CPU, bringing some continuity to the release. The APU is still Qualcomm’s Hexagon model, though the company notes there are some big changes.
According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 brings a substantial 65% increase in AI performance over the previous model. That’s a big jump for tech that’s still in infancy on mobile devices. This model will have better image generation capabilities with Stable Diffusion 1.5, which is new to the lineup. On-device computation is also heavily emphasized, which seems to be a weak point for a lot of less expensive NPUs.

Qualcomm is also pushing AI into the camera’s automatic exposure and focus tasks. The company says this is a first for building AI features directly into the hardware. Of course, what the result will be remains to be seen.
The SoC is also said to receive a 30% increase in GPU performance for gaming and a 27% improvement in CPU performance. Some of that is due to the Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0 which parcels out resources for high-performance game scenes. Qualcomm says this will go a ways in ensuring the experience is smooth.
Overall, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 looks like a fine improvement over the previous model. Qualcomm notes that the new chipset will be adopted by Honor and Vivo, with the first devices to be announced this month.
