Following other UI tweaks in recent months, the emoji, GIF, sticker, and emoticon picker in Gboard has received a small redesign.
For starters, Google has removed the “All” interface that showed recent emoji, Emoji Kitchen creations, and GIFs.
Current

At the bottom of the screen, the emoji, GIF, sticker, and emoticon buttons are now placed in rounded rectangles, which matches the general design of the other keyboard tools/shortcuts. (The order has also been rearranged.) This is a carousel (with the last section possibly offscreen), while the “ABC” is placed in a pill and the delete key at the right has been removed. Update: It’s replaced by a rather prominent delete FAB when text has been entered.
With this new approach, the touch targets are much larger than before. Meanwhile, the toolbar UI at the top of each page is now flat instead of elevated.
Upcoming

We’re seeing this emoji, GIF, etc. picker redesign with Gboard 15.3.06.x, which is the latest beta, on Pixel phones and tablets. Overall, it’s a straightforward modernization that cleans up Google’s keyboard app for Android.
