Report: Samsung preparing new battery tech for Galaxy Watch, Buds, and Ring

Samsung is reportedly looking to use new battery tech in its wearables – including Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring – as soon as later this year which would provide improved “energy density.”

MT Report says (via @Jukanlosreve) that Samsung wants to use “all-solid-state batteries” in wearables starting with the next iteration of the Galaxy Ring, due out later this year. These batteries achieve a higher energy density and are more flexible in shape, the report explains, through the use of solid electrolytes as compared to the liquid ones in lithium-ion batteries.

An existing solid-state battery developed by Samsung had energy density of around 200Wh/L, but Samsung is apparently working on an improved version that hits 360Wh/L. This new tech could arrive in the next Galaxy Ring.

While there are concerns regarding the financial feasibility of using this tech in the Ring, Samsung reportedly plans to use this updated battery in future Galaxy Buds as soon as 2026, and in the Galaxy Watch as soon as 2027. Samsung hasn’t directly confirmed any of this, but the company did tease earlier this year that it would invest in mass production facilities for this battery technology.

It’s mentioned that a Galaxy Ring featuring this upgraded battery tech could arrive in Q4 2024.
