Google acquiring cloud security company Wiz for $32B, will still work with other cloud providers

Google today announced plans to acquire Wiz, a cloud security startup, to the tune of $32 billion in an effort to strengthen its cloud security.

Wiz is a cloud security platform that works with not just Google Cloud, but other cloud providers as well. The goal with Wiz is to prevent incidents from happening before they actually happen. Google explains what Wiz does saying:

Wiz’s solution rapidly scans the customer’s environment, constructing a comprehensive graph of code, cloud resources, services, and applications – along with the connections between them. It identifies potential attack paths, prioritizes the most critical risks based on their impact, and empowers enterprise developers to secure applications before deployment. It also helps security teams collaborate with developers to remediate risks in code or detect and block ongoing attacks.

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is now acquiring Wiz in an all-cash purchase of $32 billion.

Under this new ownership, Google says that Wiz will continue to operate as an independent platform which will continue to work with other cloud providers, not just Google Cloud. Google was reportedly trying to acquire Wiz last year as well.

In its own blog post announcing the deal, Wiz reaffirms that it will continue to work with other cloud providers.

Today’s news comes back to that same guiding principle. Wiz and Google Cloud are both fueled by the belief that cloud security needs to be easier, more accessible, more intelligent, and democratized, so more organizations can adopt and use cloud and AI securely.

We both also believe Wiz needs to remain a multicloud platform, so that across any cloud, we will continue to be a leading platform. We will still work closely with our great partners at AWS, Azure, Oracle, and across the entire industry.

The acquisition is still subject to regulatory approvals.
