Marshall’s new Auracast hub turns Bluetooth speakers into a unified sound system

Bluetooth’s Auracast standard is starting to surface in new devices, like the Marshall Heddon hub that streams audio to multiple Bluetooth speakers at once.

The idea is pretty simple – create a device that connects to Wi-Fi for streaming services, or a parent device for audio control, and let it tie in with multiple Bluetooth speakers in range without dedicating itself to a singular audio device. That’s exactly what Marshall’s new Heddon is (via The Verge).

Marshall went with an Auracast hub design that offers several options to users. There are two RCA connections for plugging in a device that sends an audio signal, like a turntable, and a speaker that doesn’t have Auracast. It connects to Wi-FI for streaming through apps like Spotify or Tidal, as well.

Marshall claims that the device will work with the company’s speakers that bring Bluetooth Auracast into the mix, like these:

There’s little information on whether or not the hub will broadcast to other Bluetooth devices that are compatible with Auracast, though probable that a device marketed as an Auracast hub would do exactly that. That includes the possibility of using earbuds and headphones. After all, the Auracast standard isn’t built to be limited to one brand.

The little audio streamer is priced at $299, though the company plans to offer 50% off when one of the above speakers is purchased alongside it.
