Unique Samsung model number suggests a second Galaxy Z Fold 8 variant in the works

A new codename has recently appeared in the GSMA database, indicating that Samsung may be working on a second Galaxy Z Fold 8 device, in addition to the traditional model we’re all familiar with.

As is the case every year, new model numbers appear in the GSMA database as devices receive certifications and meet all the requirements before being announced. Samsung follows a predictable pattern in applying identifying model numbers to devices, and the latest one doesn’t exactly fit the mold.

The model SM F971U recently appeared in that database, though it stands out in comparison to surrounding monikers (via SmartPrix). Where Samsung generally uses “SM F9xx” to identify Galaxy Z Fold devices, the new model number doesn’t carry the same last digit.

If this model number were to end with “6,” it would indicate that this is the expected Galaxy Z Fold 8 in the same, yet improved, flavor that has been on the shelves for a few years. Previous Galaxy Z Fold devices have followed the same model scheme with a paired “Qx” codename.

This new model comes with the codename “H8,” which adds to the notion that this is an entirely different device from the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, or “Q8.”

Previous reports indicated that Samsung plans to release two Galaxy Z Fold models in 2026, though it could have been misconstrued as a single Galaxy Z Fold 8 model and the Galaxy Z TriFold. The timing of Samsung’s TriFold unit remains unclear, but it appears the company is preparing for two distinct Z Fold models next year, with plans for the much larger and more expensive Galaxy Z TriFold expected this year.

The report notes that Samsung aims to develop a Galaxy Z Fold model with a wider aspect ratio on the outer display, featuring a square display inside. The new model could take the form of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, as it brings a shorter silhouette when folded.

Even further, the SM F971U model number indicates that this variant would be available in the US, among other regions.

There’s little else to go on, and the latest model number surfacing doesn’t offer up much detail other than the potential for a secondary Galaxy Z Fold model in 2026. We don’t know how thin the device would be, or what other specs it might bring to the table. It may not even be marketed as a full-strength foldable under the “Fold 8” lineup.

In any case, it appears that Samsung is pushing harder into foldables this upcoming year than ever before.
