With game streaming giants taking a foothold, Amazon Luna has fallen behind in many ways. A new redesign to the Amazon Luna app could change that with a new multiplayer section, and it’s now live.
The company announced a new change to the Amazon Luna platform at the beginning of October. The streaming service that offers games instead of shows and movies is still doing the same thing, except it appears the focus is going to be on local multiplayer rather than AAA titles over the cloud.
Amazon says Luna has been “redesigned and reimagined.” It has introduced a new GameNight collection with the intention of catering to groups of friends or parties. The library of local multiplayer titles is currently set at 25, though Amazon promises to bring more to Luna in the future. The titles seem to be set around board or mobile-esque games rather than more in-depth multiplayer offerings.
GameNight won’t require a controller or keyboard for anyone in a group. Amazon has opted to bring smartphone support so users can whip out their Android or iOS device to play games with friends.
Amazon says it’s still going to be offering traditional games for subscribers. The library of titles offered has grown to around 50 for Prime members, while other streaming platforms have amassed thousands of games on the cloud.
Still, Amazon doesn’t require players to own the game in order to stream it. Plus, a large number of users already have an Amazon Prime subscription, so Luna comes at no additional cost. Luna Premium is replacing Luna+ and gets users access to even more games for $9.99/month.
The new look is now rolling out to users today, so be on the lookout for a rethought Amazon Luna.
