The Hisense U8QG is a stunning Google TV set, and an awesome deal right now

It’s not hard to find a good high-end TV anymore, but to pair a good display, good software, and a good price? That’s a harder combo, but it’s exactly what I’ve been testing out in the Hisense U8QG series lately.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been using the Hisense U8QG Mini-LED TV in my living room, and this Google TV set has impressed me in a handful of ways.

That, of course, starts with the panel itself.

The Hisense U8QG is using a 4K panel, of course, with a native 165Hz refresh rate and full-array local dimming. The Mini-LED tech Hisense is using makes everything look great. Blacks are deep and inky, while brighter content looks great thanks to 5,000 nits of peak brightness. The whole experience is tunable to your preferences, but I found it was much more vibrant compared to prior TVs I’ve tested out. Like my colleague Andrew Romero explained last year in regards to the Hisense U8N that precedes the U8QG, this panel makes a good argument to skip OLED and save a ton of money in the process. It also supports all of the key HDR standards, including Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10, HDR 10+, HDR10+ Adaptive, and HLG. Hisense does tout an anti-reflective design here, but I found that didn’t work super well, especially with dark content. The sheer brightness did make up for reflections, such as a light on my back wall, in lighter content though.

For a deeper dive into the display, I’d recommend checking out the breakdown by RTINGs, where Hisense U8QG earned an overall score of 8.2. I’d agree with that completely, as the panel here vibrant, inky, and overall just stunning.

As for the hardware, it’s a relatively standard affair.

There are three HDMI 2.1 ports on the back – all of which support eARC – two USB ports, Ethernet, optical audio and AUX, and there’s Wi-Fi 6E built-in. Some highlights for me include the USB-C port on the side of the TV, which is helpful for quickly plugging in a phone, tablet, or laptop to mirror a screen to the TV, especially when it’s mounted on a wall. That placement really just takes the headache of plugging into the back of the TV away. I’m also a fan of the blocky, but still thin aesthetic here. The back panel is fully flat (with a grid pattern) which makes it super easy to put an ambient lightstrip on the back, as I always do with my TVs.

My only real complaint about the hardware was the placement of the VESA mounting hardware. It’s a lot higher up on this TV compared to prior Hisense models I’ve tested, and other brands as well. I ended up having to take down and re-mount my wall mount as a result. Even if you’re only swapping out your TV every few years, that’s more than a minor inconvenience!

Then, there’s Google TV.

Hisense is one of the biggest Google TV partners, and its high-end hardware never fails to disappoint.

Google TV here runs fairly smooth and stable, with no major bugs in my time. Performance is roughly on par with the Google TV Streamer, and you’re getting all of the same features too, as well as support for always-listening “Hey Google” support. The included remote also works really well and is comfortable to use. As far as apps go, Hisense has its own dedicated tab on the Google TV homescreen that shows recommended apps. It’s unnecessary given there’s already a dedicated “Apps” tab that does the same thing, but it’s not in the way by any means, nor are you getting much bloatware at all.

The Hisense U8QG is, put simply, one of the best TVs I’ve ever used. It runs well, looks great, and is just an overall crowd pleaser. That’s especially true when you factor in the price.

Hisense U8QG in the 65-inch size I’ve been testing retails for $2,199.99, but it’s constantly on sale, especially lately. Some retailers including Best Buy have been offering it for around $1,100 as of late, but it’s even lower right now at just $999. Amazon is also matching that price right now. For this price, I’m not sure you can find a better TV!

What do you think of Hisense U8QG?
