Motorola’s next smartphone rivals Samsung and Apple with sub-6mm build [U]

Ultra-thin phones: they’re back, and in a big way. On the heels of Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge and the newly-released iPhone Air, Motorola is looking like the next smartphone maker looking to maximize a slim chassis over all else.

Leaker Evan Blass shared a marketing image of the Moto Edge 70, and while that lineup’s name might be nothing new, the look of the phone sure is. As the off-angle profile shot suggests, the Edge 70 appears to be maximizing thinness over all else, while keeping many of the same core elements as its predecessor. As if the device itself wasn’t enough evidence, the tagline — “Impossibly thin and incredibly tough” — sure drives the point home.

Honestly, fad-chasing aside, this design looks pretty great, although it’s difficult to really tell how slim this is compared to its predecessor. Largely speaking, this looks like a pretty classic evolution over this year’s Edge 60, right down to the textured back and the inclusion of Moto’s AI Key. The camera module also appears fairly unchanged, utilizing a raised camera bump alongside additionally-raised lenses. Motorola’s also kept the curved side panels typically seen on the Edge series.

Really, it appears like the slimmer chassis doesn’t come from a new frame design, but from slimming down the rest of the device. The 7.9mm Edge 60 wasn’t particularly slim, giving this one plenty of space to improve both its size and weight. Personally, I’m also pretty pleased to see the brand’s partnership with Pantone continuing.

This is a space that makes plenty of sense for Motorola to compete in. The company’s no stranger to manufacturing impossibly-thin smartphones; neither the Galaxy S25 Edge nor the iPhone Air managed to out-slim the first Moto Z released nearly a decade ago. Obviously, our expectations around smartphones have shifted wildly since then, and considering this leak doesn’t show support for a Moto Mods-type innovation, I wouldn’t expect the Edge 70 to be quite as exciting.

It’s not clear when Motorola might be ready to launch the Edge 70; its predecessor just released back in April of this year, but this marketing render looks pretty close to finished. Don’t expect top-tier specs on this one, as the mainline Edge series is typically reserved for mid-range smartphones.

Update, 10/3: Evan Blass returned to Twitter with a new look at the Edge 70, along with a more specified look at just how slim this phone is. According to Blass, Motorola’s next Edge entry measures in at sub-6mm in thickness, putting it right alongside the 5.8mm Galaxy S25 Edge and 5.6mm iPhone Air.

We also got a glimpse at a 30-second marketing reel for the phone, though aside from its updated, slimmer build, it looks pretty familiar to any other recent Motorola device. There’s a focus on three different color options — a fairly basic black/navy combo alongside green and teal — and, naturally, AI skills like the company’s Playlist Studio tool that originally arrived on this year’s Razr lineup. Moto also specifically shows a shot of the phone’s battery, though it’s unclear if this signals a switch to silicon-carbon, or if it’s just stressing “all-day” battery life like Samsung and Apple.

Familiar as it may be, I’m digging the look of this device, especially in that teal colorway with its red camera accents. We still don’t know when the phone’s coming — or if it’s headed to the US, for that matter — but it’s shaping up to be a poppier take on the ultra-slim fad that’s taking over the mobile industry.
