Android 16 is making the Quick Settings more useful with sizing options, but also quietly added a double-tap gesture to make it easier to more precisely edit the layout.
Once you know how to use it, Google’s new gesture provides a pretty simple time-saving hack. You’ll need to swipe down from your notification tray twice to fully extend Quick Settings, then tap the pencil icon to open the editing view. While tiles can be easily moved around by tapping the icon to select it before dragging and dropping it to its new location, double-tapping on the icon allows you to position it directly, simply by selecting the icon next to where you want to place it.
The tile you’re moving will relocate to the left of your selected position if you’re moving it up the list, and to the right of your selected position if you’re moving it down. This trick works regardless of icon size, and can be repeated to your heart’s content until you have the exact layout you’re looking for.
In the example above, I’ve double-tapped on the camera access shortcut (bottom row, second from the right), then selected the airplane mode tile, moving it to the left side of that widget within the second row.
Google doesn’t provide any notice that this feature exists. Rather, a reader tipped off the folks at Android Authority to this functionality. While it’s not really a time saver, it’s certainly more precise than the typical drag-and-drop editor.
