TCL’s NXTPAPER screen tech is easy on the eyes and a joy to use, going beyond just a matte display. But, personally, I’ve always felt that the form factors have let it down, with TCL either using it on phones or way-too-big tablets. A new 8-inch TCL NXTPAPER tablet has now surfaced, though, and that seems worth a look.
Leaker Evan Blass today posted imagery showing the logo for the “TCL Tab 8 NXTPAPER 5G,” an 8-inch cellular tablet for Verizon with the company’s special display tech. A further diagram of the tablet shows USB-C and microSD card support, a dedicated NXTPAPER key, and a headphone jack, among other standard cutouts and buttons.
It looks like a relatively standard affair, but it fills a big gap in TCL’s lineup.
Prior to this, TCL’s NXTPAPER lineup has very much focused on either end of the screen-size spectrum. There have been plenty of NXTPAPER phones, but also lots of big tablets in the 12-inch and even 14-inch range. The smallest has been the 10-inch model we reviewed last year.
The biggest question, though, is the spec sheet. My biggest issue with that 10-inch model was that the chipset was underwhelming, putting a sour note on the whole experience. While powerful but compact Android tablets are becoming more common, it’s hard to imagine TCL is going to put out anything tailored to raw horsepower.
Would you buy an 8-inch TCL NXTPAPER tablet?
