Google Drive scanner gets redesigned editor with M3 Expressive

In addition to the broader Material 3 Expressive update, Google Drive is redesigning the editor you get after using the document scanner.

There are no changes to the actual camera scanning UI as of today. The updates start after you capture a document.

You’ll immediately notice the much “larger page previews that allow you to see every detail of your scan.” This fullscreen experience lets you swipe between pages, while the bottom-right corner of each image provides “easy access to page deletion & retake.”

Meanwhile, a new tools carousel immediately underneath the preview replaces the faux-bottom bar. You Enhance, Filter, Crop & rotate, and more form here, with a connected M3 Expressive button group leveraged.

Old vs. new

Google touts how the “new Material 3 page thumbnail carousel allows you to quickly skim through your document and simply drag and drop pages to re-order them. At the end, there’s a button for scanning more items. Finally, you can “Discard scans” or tap “Next” to advance to the upload process.

Overall, Google touts a “seamless and improved user experience while editing scanned documents.” Today’s blog doesn’t specify, but the screenshots of the redesigned editor for the Google Drive scanner are from Android.

Rolling out starting today and fully launching in the coming weeks, this is “available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual Subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.”
