This new Google TV box has a ton of ports, and comes from… Acer?

More and more Google TV devices are lacking a plethora of port options, but a new option is now launching with a ton of options available, and it comes from Acer of all brands.

Acer is best known for putting out laptops, monitors, desktop computers, Chromebooks, and the occasional Android tablet too. But a Google TV box is certainly an unexpected addition to the company’s lineup, but the company is now preparing to launch exactly that.

On a pre-order page in South Africa – the device doesn’t seem to be hitting the rest of the global market at this time – Acer details its “4K UHD Google TV Box.” The streaming box has Google’s typical reference design remote paired with a non-descript white box that has Acer’s logo in the corner.

But that box does have a lot of ports.

On the side there’s a USB-A port and a USB-C port, and then the backside has another USB-C port (this one for power) alongside ports for HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio, and a microSD card slot.

Acer’s pre-order page doesn’t list a ton in terms of specifications beyond a “Quad core Amlogic CPU” – apparently an Amlogic S905X5 – Wi-Fi 6, and 2GB of RAM. Android Authority cites a press release that apparently says the device has 3GB of RAM, so it’s unclear what the device actually offers.

Having a known brand like Acer behind a device like this is pretty compelling, so it’s a bit of a shame we’re not seeing a broader release of this Google TV box, at least not yet. Would you get one?
