Some early Pixel 10 buyers report wireless charging issues; start and stop, slow speeds

As Pixel 10 devices are arriving on doorsteps this week, some of the early issues are coming to light. For a number of Pixel 10 owners, some wireless chargers seem to be presenting an issue.

Wireless charging can occasionally be finicky, but some users are finding issues with their existing setups in the Pixel 10 series. Users on Reddit (and our tip box, thanks Henry!) report that some wireless chargers are not working properly with Pixel 10 devices.

Issues seem to vary, but one is that the Pixel 10 (or Pro, or XL) will start charging on a charger but stop after a few seconds or minutes. We’ve not been able to replicate this on our end, but there are quite a few users running into the problem.

The other issue seems to be with charging speeds. For some chargers, speeds are limited to just a mere 5W or so. We’ve observed this with a MagSafe (but not Qi2) charger we’ve tested, as well as some other older Qi chargers, including the Pixel Stand 2nd Gen. This one seems relatively consistent with older chargers, though the exact reasoning is unclear.

From what we can tell, though, it could simply be due to the Qi2 update, and specifically the switch to the magnetic power profile (MPP) from the “EPP” or “extended power profile.” The EPP supports up to 15W, as does MPP, but MPP relies on magnets to ensure the alignment is correct. We’ve not seen any documentation (yet) to show the two aren’t interchangeable, but others have found this same problem in the past. Slower charging is a bit better for your battery health, but it’s certainly a bit of a headache if you’re not ready for it.

For the Pixel Stand in particular, the likely reason for slower charging is that Google’s semi-proprietary fast charging method has been updated to be a part of the Qi2 standard, so it’s likely that support for the prior Pixel Stand method is no longer in place.

As far as the Pixel 10 series’ listings in the WPC database go, there’s no indication of a charging limit for non-Qi2 chargers.

I can avoid a external charger but how can I avoid a charger in a car which worked pretty fine with my Pixel 9 Pro. But with my P10Pro I ran into the problem that together with Android Auto it will loaded but not enough and the battery will loose during driving nevertheless if it's in wireless charger

We’ll have to dig deeper into this in the near future, but in the meantime, be warned that you might run into slower charging – or potentially intermittent charging issues – on older wireless chargers. Your best bet for full-speed wireless charging is to get a charger with Qi2 certification. Luckily, that’s a long and ever-growing list.

Below are a few recommendations that we’ve confirmed are on the WPC’s database with full MPP certification:
