Gemini app rolls out Temporary chat

Following the announcement earlier this month, the Gemini app is widely rolling out “Temporary chat.”

Open the side panel on web or mobile for a new circular icon — dashed message bubble — next to “New chat” underneath the search field.

“Temporary chat” then appears in lieu of the usual greeting, with Google explaining how: “Temporary chats don’t appear in Recent Chats or Gemini Apps Activity and aren’t used to train models or personalize your experience. To help respond to you and keep Gemini safe, temporary chats are saved for 72 hours.”

“Ask in a temporary chat” also shows up in the prompt bar and at the top of the screen above the model picker once you’re in a thread. After leaving this conversation, you will “no longer have access to that chat.”

These following features aren’t available in a Temporary chat:

  • Use Gems.
  • Use connected apps and services that require the Gemini App Activity setting to be turned on.
  • Get personalized responses.
  • Save information for future personalization.
  • Give feedback about the response.

This is currently available for personal users, and not work or school accounts. We’re seeing it on Android, iOS, and the web today.

Meanwhile, Google is having fun with the recent launch of Gemini 2.5 Flash Image — or “nano banana” — by adding an emoji to the Tools menu.
