Google rolls out new pill-shaped Gemini overlay on Android

Following the four-color glow at the start of this month, the Gemini overlay is now a pill with a rather gooey launch animation.

The Gemini overlay you launch with the “Hey Google” hotword, long-pressing the power button, or swiping diagonally on the bottom corners no longer slides up from the bottom of the screen as one rounded rectangle.

Instead, it starts as a circle that quickly expands from the center of your screen into a wide pill.

There’s no change to the internal layout of the ‘plus’ menu (which remains a list), the voice input microphone, Gemini Live shortcut, or drag handle to open the homepage.

Similarly, the “Share screen with Live” and “Ask about screen” buttons are also now pills.

The overlay no longer matches the shape of the prompt bar inside the full app, with the inconsistency somewhat curious. Instead, it matches the Circle to Search bar and Pixel Launcher field.

We’re seeing this new Gemini overlay pill widely rolling to the beta (16.33) and stable (16.32) Google apps. Be sure to Force stop from App info.
