Major Fitbit app redesign adds dark theme, Gemini-powered ‘Coach’

Google today announced a major update and redesign for the Fitbit app on your phone that adds a Gemini/AI-powered coach. It’s not exclusive to the Pixel Watch 4 and will be available for all past generations, as well as Fitbit devices, with the preview starting in October.

As previously teased, the Fitbit app will leverage Material 3 Expressive with this redesign finally adding a dark theme. The top portion is now more compact with the main circular metric at the left and three stats next to it. The bottom bar has been reorganized into Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health tabs. Other improvements include “more intuitive” data visualization of stats, “easier layouts to find information,” and improved syncing.

Google has built a personal health coach with Gemini. It specifically can be a “fitness trainer, a sleep coach, and a health and wellness advisor.” “Ask Coach” exists as a new FAB (floating action button).

Fitbit Coach understands your health goals to create a personalized fitness trainer. At a high-level, it “builds a plan around what you want to achieve while taking into account the rest of your needs.”

The experience starts by setting your goals, preferences, and equipment to build a personalized fitness plan with “detailed workout suggestions and metric targets that focus on weekly progression.” For example, this week’s fitness plan might focus on improving stride length to help run efficiency by doing a tempo run on Wednesday and treadmill intervals on Saturday.

These plans will be adjusted based on real-time data and daily insights: “if you wake up with a low readiness because of a poor night sleep, it will automatically suggest changes to adjust your weekly plan to help you recover.”

The conversational nature also allows you to say, for example, that you tweaked your back and need to adjust the workout. You can also share how you’re feeling and get other advice.

On the sleep coach front, Fitbit has “new advanced algorithms that give you a more precise understanding of your sleep duration and stages.” The Coach will look at “your sleep over the week, spotting patterns and giving insights on how to improve your sleep quality over time.”

For example, your coach will point out areas to focus on, like noticing you’re taking a long time to fall asleep on weekdays or helping you overcome jetlag after a recent trip.

Personalized sleep scheduling that adjusts to daily activity levels means Fitbit can “add 35 minutes to help you recover from a challenging workout the day before.”

As a health and wellness advisor, the Coach looks through real-time data from your Fitbit tracker/smartwatch or Pixel Watch, as well as what’s synced (smart scales, glucose monitors, etc.) through Health Connect and HealthKit.

The Coach will offer proactive insights and progress inspiration, while you can ask any health and fitness question. You can chat about specific workouts or “how do I fight jetlag,” with answers backed by science:

  • “Should I get an extra hour of sleep or workout tomorrow morning?”
  • “I’m feeling stressed right now. What can I do?”
  • “What are the best exercises for weight loss?”

The app redesign and Coach are rolling out as a preview starting in October for Fitbit Premium users in the US. You can sign-up to get a notification when it’s available.
