Best Buy abandons ‘tech only’ approach with new marketplace, brings back Blu-Ray

Best Buy is launching a new digital marketplace, moving away from its long-standing, narrow tech-focused approach. The new store will offer a wider variety of products, like sports merch from Fanatics and – wait for it –couches.

The “tech store” has taken many forms over the years, and many end up like Radio Shack if they don’t at least attempt to evolve (RIP). Best Buy appears to be trying to stick around as tariffs and inflation take hold in the US, so it’s modernizing into a platform that can more easily sway with trends beyond phone lineups and cameras.

Best Buy announced that it’s launching a new digital marketplace powered by its own inventory and third-party sellers. The expansion will allow the company to take on more products from different brands, where the brick-and-mortar storefront might struggle to offload them.

With more sellers on the site, we can introduce new products faster — as well as more colors, more styles, and more options — to keep up with new emerging trends.

The company notes that the Best Buy Marketplace will bring in “hundreds” of new brands, citing categories like seasonal decor, office and home, and automotive tech. The marketplace will even offer a Fanatics fan shop for collectibles and other licensed merchandise. Perhaps one of the more strange additions will be musical instruments.

According to Best Buy, this shake-up also means physical movies are making a comeback. That will include the return of Blu-Ray, DVD, and 4K SteelBook. The storefront stopped selling physical movie media in 2024 due to the growing reliance on streaming. It appears customers have convinced the seller to bring them back to stores, though they may only be available online and not in-store.

According to Best Buy, the move will better serve customers looking to build tech setups by suggesting accessories and products that might work well together. The marketplace may also make it easier for users to find items and return them if they’re not what they’re looking for.

Best Buy will still sell phones on launch day, like the new Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro. It seems the company is still offering trade-in promotions and some significant discounts with credit.

Best Buy Marketplace is now apparently live through the company’s website.
