Google Home app now fully supports older Nest thermostats with scheduling

Through recent updates, the Google Home app is now fixing the final deficiency of older Nest thermostats with the arrival of scheduling support.

For quite some time now, owners of older-generation Nest thermostats have been able to control temperatures and a handful of settings through the Google Home app, but more advanced options were still limited to the Nest app. The biggest missing feature was temperature scheduling, which is a key feature of all of Google’s older Nest Thermostat models.

With this update, users can expect to manually set temperature schedules for Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) and Nest Thermostat E and see their existing schedules from the Nest app transferred over to the Home app. You’ll also be able to see and use sensors with the Learning Thermostat.

While Auto-Schedule helps you save energy and keep your family comfortable, we know many customers prefer to manually set schedules. All of your existing schedules from the Nest app will carry over to the Home app, so you can add, remove, or change temperature events for heating and cooling where it is most convenient. You’ll also be able to set sensor and fan schedules to keep your thermostat running with the perfect configuration for your home.

Of course, the first two generations of Nest Learning Thermostat aren’t getting these changes, as those devices will be disconnected in the near future.

Google further explains that there have been some changes for newer Nest thermostats in the Home app. These are largely visual and include:

  • Making it easier to clearly see your thermostat’s heating and cooling state in the Google Home app, with more vibrant colors and updated descriptions
  • Refreshed energy dashboard that shows separate totals for heating and cooling, a breakdown of usage by stage and heating type if present in your system (e.g. alternative heat, auxiliary heat, first and second stage), and a weekly year-over-year comparison of your monthly energy usage

These updates started rolling out recently, but since support for older thermostats only started rolling out last week, it might not be available to everyone just yet.
