This YouTube app alternative just added Android Auto support

NewPipe is an open-source YouTube app for Android and, now, it has Android Auto support.

The idea of NewPipe is to offer a lightweight alternative to the standard Android app, and also features integration with SoundCloud and Bandcamp. That makes it a nice option for listening to music and podcasts from multiple platforms.

In the NewPipe 0.28.0 update released late last month, Android Auto support has arrived. This added support allows users to stream music from YouTube, SoundCloud, and Bandcamp from their car’s display. The app supports accessing playlights as well as your listening history,

More specifically, the car integration allows you to access and play streams from your history and from your local and remote bookmarked playlists, search YouTube or any other service you have currently selected in NewPipe, and control the player including the playing queue.

Development on this addition started in 2022 and has been in the works ever since, but it’s only now available to all users. Notably, though, NewPipe is only available for sideload, rather than being distributed through the Play Store – so do so only at your own risk.

Of course, the Android Auto version doesn’t support video either. This is an audio-only experience, though Google may open the door to video support down the road.
