Samsung’s engineering is brought into question every single year when a new foldable lineup comes out, and every year, things get just a little bit better. The brand-new Galaxy Z Flip 7 goes through the same torture tests, and it just won’t give in.
There’s one key difference between this year’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 and last year’s design. Samsung decided to finally equip the device with a full outer display, taking advantage of the entire panel rather than a small area beneath the cameras. With that, the phone is slightly more vulnerable, but Gorilla Glass Victus 2 covers the entire screen.
In a classic torture and durability test, JerryRigEverything puts the Galaxy Z Flip 7 through its paces. That includes fire-to-display heat tests, varying hardness scratches, and pocket sand.
The cover displays scratches at a level 6, with more noticeable marks at a level 7. With that, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 proves to be traditionally good at preventing scratches during the test, though it’s still worth being careful not to dump the Galaxy Flip 7 into a pocket with your keys.
The internal display has not changed much, and like most OEMs, Samsung is still using a soft, flexible glass with a plastic screen protector that should not be removed. That plastic cover scratches easily at a level 2, as expected.
Where things get interesting is the bend test. Just like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Fold 5 before it, the Flip 7 did not break when getting bent beyond recognition. Samsung’s hinges have come a long way, and it seems like the company is beginning to ensure that these foldables will not break during improper use. That doesn’t go for proper use, as some users have reported screen cracks at the hinge during normal use, at least for previous models.
Samsung says the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is rated for over 200,000 folds. That’s plenty of folds for a phone’s lifetime, and it’s good to see that number increase from the 200,000 folds the Flip 5 and Fold 5 were rated for. The phone has genuinely come a long way.
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Fold 7 are both available from Samsung now, with decent trade-in credits available.
