Google’s latest Circle to Search redesign looks like the TVA portals from ‘Loki’

After adding Song Search history, Circle to Search on Android is testing a redesigned animation that looks straight out of Loki.

The current animation has a rounded container (with corner handles) immediately expand out from where you tapped. A colorful, pulsating glow surrounds the shape.

Google is testing a new design that’s initially a solid container with the glow inside the box.  It sticks around for a full second or so before expanding to the existing design that allows you to adjust the crop.

We think it’s a fun change that’s pretty reminiscent — from how it appears to the translucency — of the portal design in the Disney+ series Loki when the TVA (Time Variance Authority) appears. Since the show aired in 2021, people have had fun recreating it as an effect for their videos or filters.

It feels more noticeable and vibrant than the existing animation, with your eyes focusing on the box. That’s presumably the intended goal. It follows Google updating Circle to Search with a transparent navigation bar and updated long-press behavior earlier this year.

This animation is still in testing and not yet widely rolled out on devices we checked today.
