Bing is growing with the help of AI as Google slightly shrinks

Following years of Google being the dominant player in search, the company is finally seeing some challengers arise in the age of AI. As a part of that, Microsoft’s Bing is actually gaining some traction, with recent numbers revealing that Bing has grown over the past two years while Google is slightly shrinking.

Microsoft’s Head of Search, Jordi Ribas, took to Twitter/X this week with new numbers from ComScore and StatCounter to show that, since early 2023, Bing has managed to grow compared to Google. Bing managed to grow – by about 2% in ComScore numbers and 3% according to StatCounter – while Google has dropped slightly – by 1% and 6%, respectively.

Ribas attributes Bing’s growth to continued efforts in building out new functionality in the search egine, such as Copilot Search, but there’s another factor at play. Bing provides a portion of the backend for search in some AI agents, such as ChatGPT and Meta AI, which gives Bing’s numbers a bit of a boost.

Ribas explains:

Over the last fiscal year, we’ve been thrilled to bring users many innovations like Copilot Search in Bing, and we’re also growing thanks to powering web grounding for third-party leading chatbots including ChatGPT and Meta AI. Kudos to the entire team for all their work and innovation in fueling this growth and bringing competition to the search industry. Excited to continue this momentum into the next fiscal year as we continue building AI-powered search and answer experiences.

This comes as the search engine market continues to shift. Google still holds the vast majority of users, but it’s clear that a number of people are willing to give new tools a shot nowadays, with AI tools becoming a go-to for many.
