The original Pixel Fold was a good start for Google’s foldable ambitions, but it didn’t age well and was quickly replaced by the drastically better Pixel 9 Pro Fold. But, if you’ve been itching to try a foldable without the crazy cost, the original Pixel Fold is a worthwhile start at its limited-time price of $599.
Closing out Amazon’s Prime Day sales event, the Pixel Fold (2023) is currently available for $599 in a limited-time “Lightning Deal.” At the time of posting, the deal is just 3% claimed and is open solely to Prime members.
That price is down over $1,000 from the Fold’s launch price and even the usual retail price on Amazon. Even compared to the $749 “Regular Price” for this particular deal, it’s still a solid offer.
But, why would you want a two-year-old foldable when newer models are so rapidly improving? The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, as mentioned, is drastically better, and the new Galaxy Z Fold 7 is perhaps the best overall foldable you can buy today. But those are both over a thousand dollars more expensive.
If you’re just looking to try a foldable, the Pixel Fold is a pretty good entry point if you temper your expectations. You should know going in that this device isn’t the same form factor as most (for better or worse, depending on your opinion), and is quite heavy by newer standards. Google’s older Tensor G2 chip holds up fine from a performance standpoint, but the chip was already prone to overheating because Google stuffed in into a thinner, harder to keep cool device. That was my biggest complaint with the device. The other thing to keep in mind is that the display crease that all foldables have is… uh… bigger on the Pixel Fold. I never found that a deal breaker, personally, but keep in mind that the crease is another aspect that newer foldables, including Google’s own, have improved on.
But if you’re fine with all of that, a $599 Pixel Fold seems worth a go! Frankly, it’d be hard to get a used foldable for a price this low, at least one in good condition. So, if you want to give the foldable game a shot, now might be the time!
